I don't feel one bit sorry for those truckers, all they have to do is pay a little attention to what's going on....and use some brains. Happy for the tow operators though, they're making a fortune.

Peculiar MO is just south of Kansas City on Highway 71. There is a flying J trucktstop. Bad storm coming in, all over the weather reports. I had picked up a load in KC going to Presidents Island in Memphis. Was snowing before I finished loading. I went to Peculiar and parked. Got a shower, ate supper. Place was really filling up by then. I went to bed. Got up every couple hours and moved my truck back and forth a bit. About 3-4 A.M. I see flashing yellow lights out on the highway from snow plows. I can't leave though cause I am blocked in by other trucks. Even the fuel islands had guys sleeping at them. Sun comes up and a tow truck was there charging 200 bucks a truck to pull them so they could start moving. I had kept the snow under my truck packed down by moving back and forth. I don't know how much that tow company made but it was a bunch. Took maybe 5 minutes to get each truck unstuck.

Donner is notorious for blizzards. That storm was predicted. Instead of camping on the highway they should have stayed in Reno or Auburn or Sacramento. Its imperative to tell a dispatcher no sometimes. They are sitting inside a building, hundreds of miles away with a computer and phone. Big part of their wages is commission. Most of them will lie and cajole unashamedly. The bone heads who kept going till they had to park on the shoulder probably won't do it again. They drive blindly with their CB shut off listening to sirious radio or the old hands would have told them what I just said. Of course many dont speak English or ever seen a bad snow and would be shut down on the shoulder anyway wishing they had more food and water along and did not need fuel since dispatch wanted them over the hill before fueling.
