I've neve seen a beaver do that. But, I've had a couple build a castor mound a few feet away from the one I've made.
Remember as a kid we played army and you gave up the fort so the other side got it? Of course you don't. Little kids aren't that stupid.

I had a dead kit beaver in a conibear up on land one time and beavers came and covered it up with sticks. Have had that happen twice. And it wasn't a bobcat...it was beavers.

I've had them completely destroy/cover the whole thing with new mud. They usually always eat the lure stick I use.

A lot of times a beaver reacting to foreign castor will be on full alert when approaching it and won't come in where you would expect. Once he ascertains that there isn't an interloper present, and destroys or tops what you put out, they drop their guard and take the most direct route back to the water and get caught then. I catch most of my beavers on the way back into the water. Agree, that happens more than a lot of trappers think. I've watched a lot of beavers work a castor set and a lot of them climb out on one side or the other like you said, and leave thru the trap. Especially on a flatter open bank.

Oh yea Ill agree with that.. Ive pics of beaver that were caught by the front left foot, but the trap was bedded for the front right foot. Which to me says they got caught coming down the bank towards the water..

Those that are really particular on which way they have their footholds, bodygrips and snares sets, can tell which way the animal was going when they got caught. It gets really apparent in bodygrips when the beaver dont move the trap after it fires.

Its easy to tell with 330's when you always set the dogged jaw towards the bank.

Beavers can do some stuff that makes you scratch your head. Like the time I had a number 4 LS set on the pond side of a cross-over. Came to check it two days later and found that a beaver had taken a pealed stick about the size of those over-sized pencils you used in grade one, and flipped the trap completly over and out of the way without springing it. I would have thought someone was pranking me if there hadn't been a few inches of snow on the ground (no human tracks other than mine).
