This primitive log barn was situated on the Allen Hatfield homeplace on Beech Creek, which was inherited by one of his sons, Estil, (shown standing by the stairs leading to the loft of the structure).

Estil said the structure originally stood on another part of the family land, at the mouth of Grapevine Fork of Beech Creek, where Estil's grandfather, “Wall" Hatfield (brother of Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield), built his log cabin in 1861, the first year of the Civil War.

When Allen Hatfield built his homeplace elsewhere on the family acreage, he dismantled the log barn and reassembled it on the present site, where it is still in use.

The floors of the log farm building are likely of cucumber trees, and are still intact. The body of the barn is bullt of poplar and cucumber logs, and the rafters are poplar.

— Originally submitted by Estil Hatfield and published in the Williamson Dally News, Mon., Aug. 2, 1982.

Cucumber lumber (Magnolia) were one of the big money makers that Devil Anse Hatfield Timbered. BTW guys, it was Northern Lawyers that tried to scam Devil Anse out of his Timber Holdings that actually started the Hatfield/McCoy war. The pig tale was just that a tale to get a war started. My Grandmother was a McCoy and I have a great Uncle that was a Hatfield. They are all friends and most are Miners.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

You don’t see many barns like that.
