walleyed has come into the possession of a set of giant
Barkstone castor glands that might weigh over two pounds !!!

Do castor buyers buy these mutated freak glands
like they do castor glands that are of regular condition ?

They are hard as a brick with a very thin outer membrane
with no liquid of any kind inside them.

One side of the set is 4 X times the size of the other !!!

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

walleyed

I sell them right along with the other castors. No deduction or added value either. Personally, I wonder whether mineralized castor is as good as regular...have my doubts.

No chance,

The bigger of the two glands would tear an ear off from the weight.

I’ve caught a few beavs in my life with those kind of castors. I’ve always wondered what led to that condition, no one has ever offered up a reason. They sold with the other castor, never heard a complaint.

Obviously there is something wrong to cause that type of calcification. I often see it in just one side as if a duct was plugged or something. Maybe it's something akin to kidney stones in humans.

I would tend to agree with a blocked duct leading to a buildup and consequential hardening of the contents due to stagnation within the gland. Backup creates compression over time. Sort of like a trash compactor at work from the castor within the gland.

I caught my fair share of beaver but never got one. I'd certainly be pleasantly surprised to get one.

Has anyone ground and used one of these for lure yet?

The contents are still castor, just would need to be pulverized and rehydrated to reconstitute into a more workable material.

I've sold a few of them, it's usually one side.

PCR confirms that it is a hardball, not a softball. He said he’s already made lure out of it, going to give me some.
