Iowa churches often had the entire Congregation drive the section after the Sunday service in the late 40s into late 50s. Fur taken was sold for the Church coffers. Small & large game became a feast or was donated to less fortunate or elderly.

In Virginia, Sunday hunting on private land was allowed but was banned on public land. That changed in 2022 with the lifting of the Sunday hunting ban on public land. I can't tell when the NRA put that notice out but it is out of date.

A ban on Sunday hunting limits folks who work Mon thru Fri to one full hunting day a week. It cuts their hunting opportunity in half. If the weather sucks on Saturday it may mean no hunting at all that week. If they are Jewish and observe the Sabbath on Saturday, they cannot hunt at all. I am all for supporting the right of people to practice their religion of choice, but not to impose their religious beliefs on others. It is long past time for blue laws to be repealed.

Most of these laws were put in place by far right religious supporters imposing their values on others. Those supporters have decreased in number over time, but now the far left sees hunting and gun ownership as an evil and a prohibition on Sunday hunting as an opportunity to reduce the introduction of young folks to guns and hunting.

Rediculous, with that mindset just think how much game would be saved with a total ban on hunting. If you want a day off just take one. Why should it be mandatory?

You would have to feel for the guy that worked 6 days a week and had Sunday off.

and if you were the coal mine who let him have Sunday off you also wanted him spending what he had earned buying food for the family at the company store.

With no date on the NRA article, impossible to tell when it was but it is definitely not current for North Carolina. We do have some restrictions on Sundays, most notably no migratory bird hunting on no use of deer dogging on Sundays. The following is straight from our current regulations digest.

exactly why? Seriously dumb law. Glad ours got dumped so we can hunt Sundays and have been able to for a long time. There's way too many laws these days for us outdoorsman. If ya want a day off then don't hunt on Sundays and do the church thing but don't make everyone follow because of religious reasons and the church lobbiers.

Heck just shoot everything all year. Spot lighting included , now that's ridiculous

The Sunday hunting bans had/have nothing to do with game conservation

It doesn't matter so much now that I'm retired but when I was working I thought they should do all the 2 day hunts (early muzzleloader, doe days, quota hunts) on Wednesday and Thursday rather than Saturday and Sunday because after all Wednesday and Thursday were my days off so that's when the hunts should have been.

Religious belief aside I miss the "blue laws". There is a real benefit from having a day of rest for the individual. You just can't run 24/7 without something breaking down. JMO but I think society benefits if we recognize that biological fact.

At least the hound hunters are forbidden in NC on Sunday.

try and have a hunt going on the holidays like Thanksgiving , Christmas , new years

other holidays fishing is going.

Fishing seasons? What's that? ... no such thing here. (well except a couple yuppy fisherman lakes)

there is always something open like cats, pan fish , non-game fish species , but trout , walleye on lakes , bass have closed spawning.

something about the way Sconies are wired for putting away food the DNR feels the need to set limits to catch and bag on almost everything.

a friends dad loves fishing but was not raised with any sort of catch and release if it can reasonably be cleaned he will and he won't fish if he has to catch and release even though he loves fishing.

works out for him the has a lot of old friends , not that he is a spring chicken himself but he is still getting around where many of his old friends are not so he he brings them fish al cleaned and they have fish fries at different peoples houses.
the fish gets eaten and he can go fishing again the next day.

I am sure he isn't the only guy here wired like that.

Lived with it my whole life, alot of it working 6 days a week and later on 5 days a week.

I had no trouble finding time to hunt, and living where I do with alot of Amish/Mennonite owned land along with MOST people being people of God, I wouldn't have hunted anyhow and still don't on the three days were permitted to.


It doesn't bother me that others do, what ever trips your trigger. Most land is posted now a days anyhow so whatecer.
