You may want to try wooden dowels or rods. This summer hit the flea markets & garage sales. You can find them cheap there instead of retail.
They camouflage well being real wood
TILL THAT DAY.....

They use lacquer on fishing rods.

Maybe bury them in black muck a few months? This may not work , even if the muck turns them very dark. A lot of commercial products that are white in color also have what is known as an optical britener. In other words a UV dye. To our eyes it makes whites look whiter. Check with a UV light to see if they floresce or glow. Some animals can see UV better than humans. You might have get a paint/coating to cover it.

Ive been wanting to try some fiberglass and proably will this year. I dont want white though, two much eye appeal for folks who like to steal bank poles and traps on public land. I dug around and found a company that has black fiberglass rods though they are a bit higher. I dont paint my water traps flat black anymore because of that. I use something like OD green now

As long as you sand then with some 220 taking off the sheen paint should bond.
I don’t see the white causing refusals myself. My body grip supports are bright red as are all my drowning locks. Never been an issue !
