Did not want to hijack another thread but it got me thinking. Years ago my fur buyer claimed he was making almost as much money on meats as he was on the coon pelts. He sold them by the pound. I bought several for co-workers over the years. All were black. We had a black quality manager once that wanted to set up a coon meat side business with me. He worked with several churches in the Detroit area and said the market could not be satisfied. Was nervous about selling meats specially some that were froze guts in, defrosted, skinned and gutted and then sold for food. I thought a little more than looking for green belly's was needed for quality control. So i did not take him up on his offer. lol
Is there still a market or is it going away as the older generations pass? Any that has sold coon meat how did you handle the meats?

There's still a market. I would skin and gut fresh coon. Leave both feet and head on. Double bag with one foot hanging outside of bag for handle when froze. Sold a couple times a month throughout season. Sold to one guy $7 across the board. Last weekend, Super Bowl weekend, was always when demand was greatest.

There's still a good market in the south, it will take some searching . But be careful of scams any more. My biggest fear was when Fly bait was going around, would only sell trapped and some hunted . With fur prices down , coon are not targeted like they were, so the population in the south may have replenished. Knew of a guy that would come up from Georgia and buy all he could get. I'm sure they were going for around $7.00 each. LOL The fur dealer that sold them paid me $3.00 each.

The one winter I trapped down south, I got $5 for coon gutted, one foot left on and $5/possum in the round. That's the way they wanted possum here also. Heard they burned off the fur and scraped the skin , then roasted like a hog. I was glad to sell them whole , hated fleshing them , they had such thin hides.

There's not many colored folks where I live. At least no enough for a coon meat marker that is. Wish there was, there's no shortage of them around here. And there's about a dozen that frequent the deer feeder out back.
There's a Predator Bash the weekend of the 23rd in town Yotes,Bobcats, coons and skunks by any legal means. Planning on hitting them hard that weekend.

I sold meats when I started trapping to a high numbers coon man in Delaware county. He had a good market. I got 4.00 each and was real happy. 1980 to 1984 after I turned 18 I didnt want to risk getting pinched. I don't know the laws in PA. but in Ohio it's legal to sell the meat of fur bearers .

Insert profound nonsense here

Went to meet my buyer one time at a gas station in the hood. Was sitting in the truck and a young black guy walks up trying to sell me some devil's lettuce. Told him I wasn't buying I was selling and pointed to the back of the truck. He saw all those coon feet sticking out of the bags, gave me a crazy look, and went on about his business. lol.
