Remember when I first got in here there where a lot of long detailed threads like killpole karma , coyote wars, mink mink and more mink ect going , lotta different ideas and stuff being shared and tired but seems that trend kinda fizzed out .. why ?

Did T-Man have the strictly trapping forum when you first got here?

I try to post a lot of trapping- related content and pics to start trapping- related threads. Only a handful of others on here add trapping info. Several just critique what you post when they only have experience trapping closet mice.

Sometimes I do respond to political BS and other topics, but I regret it most times.

Few are trapping because of no return so they talk about other stuff.

Even during fur's last good spike in 2010-11 there wasn't much...about like now.

Plus, beaver ain't gonna get any higher than we are seeing right now.

I guess that don't matter to the closet mice trappers.

I guess a lot of guys just like to blow off steam about politics/religion and border this, president that.... Thats fine and all if its what you want but I retired from the dept of justice, the gov't... Its the last thing I want to talk about every 15 minutes of every day, LOL...
Id rather talk about which #1 long you like for mushrat slides than the border... Thats just me but to each their own...

They dont get a return because they dont trap
And there comes a point when everything has been covered.
And some likely assume most trappers already know the trade,so feel like anything they might add is redundant.
And some may not share certain methods because they feel they are irrelevant to 90% of trappers on here and perhaps wont be understood,or go over mosts heads..

I'm guessing because when you came on here 10 years ago fur prices were still decent. Wasn't that about when otter were bringing up to $150? There were a lot of new trappers at that time in it for the money. Since then many of those trappers quit, and the rest have learned how to trap and aren't new anymore. Not a lot of new guys jumping in to trap $2 coon.

I think most of us on here have been here longer than you, and we actually have trapped for at least that long and so don't find a lot of new subjects to jaw about. I try to answer questions for newbies, but honestly for the past 5 years I don't think I've had more than 20 sets out at any one time. Just not much to talk about.

There is no right way or wrong way to trap something. Unfortunately, on here there is. Why even post what works for you where you live and trap?

yotetrapper30 I agree with what you said . How many times can you talk about how to make a dirt hole or mod a trap or put fur up. I mean not much new is there? If you are a new trapper the archives are full of good advice.

A lot has to do with the markets as to interest in what species is hot at the time that brings in new trappers with that. A lot of the flavor of the month guys generates excitement for a short time and move on, few people become lifelong trappers.

Some folks trap for weeks some for months even years but move on just the way it works out people looking for their passion in life. Some guys are the 12 Karate lesson guys sign up for 12 lessons take 3 lessons and move on some earn their belts.

I think that's a big part of it. I still kill coons, opossums, skunks and coyotes on my farm, because they are a nuisance, but I don't go anywhere else to do it. I donate catches to Wilmington College or toss them in the manure pile. I haven't put up or sold fur in years. I would lose money doing it.

I should have taken a picture of the moose leg I caught in a wolf snare that a wolverine was trying to carry off to cache at that wolf kill. The wolverine must have been mighty confused about why he couldn't get that leg untangled from the brush. He sure screwed up a good snare trying to keep his leg.

You don't see stuff like this posted on here every day. smile

I disagree with your last sentence simply due to the fact that it's the exact opposite of the spirit in which this website was created, which was to help new trappers prosper.

It's fine to let a new trapper know there is a lot of info in the archives, but I also wholeheartedly believe it is our DUTY as more experienced trappers to at least give an effort to answer their "which set is best" questions.

My post was in reference to why I personally don't post new trapping related posts.... I just have nothing new to add.

Yes Dirt. I would have much rather seen that post than your normal copy and pastes with no added context.

I'm here to entertain myself. The copy and paste is to stop the endless threads based on nonsense.

I get that. But I think I think a tiny bit closer to the way YOU think than most people on here do, but nevertheless I often find myself scratching my head at your copy and pastes since you add no comments to explain the context. If I'm not getting you, rest assured the vast majority on here aren't either, lol.

I think you do too. I do a lot of teaching. I don't know how to state this without sounding arrogant. So I'm going to pass. Hopefully you are digesting some good stuff from your macroeconomics class. I think you are from some of your recent posts.

How is there a smart (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) tone in a copy and paste?

You know what I'm talking about and it is no copy and paste.

Seems like I remember you replying to a post I made a while back. You stated that nobody cares what I think. You were probably right, but on the flip...nobody gives a crap what you think either.

Most on here are likely as tired as I am that on every fur market post you were complaining about how your Alaskan fur was not profitable and that the rest of us should stop adding to the market so your product would go up in price...

Why would I state," nobody cares what you think?" About what? Do you even know what my Alaskan fur is? It is a species called a marten. How in heck does anybody in the lower 48 effect the price of marten? Every fur market post since 2013 pretty much prices are bad. It is what it is. Most prices are not profitable on most species for anybody. Marten prices will be profitable this year. If I recommend people stop supplying this market, it is for them not me.

Not selling at these ridiculous prices makes sense to me. If you want to make money trapping its time to go the the ADC route in urban areas. Become a gman. Look for a niche market. Putting skins into the fur market IS a bad plan.

The reason we don't have posts on how to anymore is that stuff has been beat to death. Kids aint interested in working their tails off to lose money and us mature folks already know how we like to do things.

b/c the people that knew what they were talking about and made posts like that eventually get tired of putting up with all the dumb crap people would say in their post disagreeing with them or saying something to egg them on so its easier to just not post.

remember when matt jones would have a thread, like a fish stick thread, that you would look forward to reading? I think he got tired of people telling him he couldn't catch coon like that. The answer to your question is... 'whatever that reason is, is why people like that aren't around anymore', is why we don't see those threads anymore. The guys that used to catch 1,000 coons in illionios got tired of arguing with everyone that you can't catch 1,000 coons. Wheres phil the fox guy at lately? etc etc etc. Maybe markets low and those guys aren't trapping as much too. if coon were worth $ again I bet you'd see those guys back wacking and stacking tho so it isn't just one thing. Its all those things added up.

If you think about it now all those guys are gone and the other guys stayed and now they wonder why their posts get deleted.

Years back there was a guy that took the time to make quality videos to post he knew what he was talking about one day some non contributor types gave him a hard time asking him, who was he to post such videos? He moved on and stopped posting a wealth of knowledge was lost because of some tools that would be gone in a short time.

I agree that people get tired of posting just to get unneeded feedback constantly with people turning everything into a negative or what it never was just to create a problem that was never there. Way too many adolescent adults that destroy the culture for their own amusement making it easier for folks to not post. Just look at the amount of people that are watching vs how many of them are posting.

You get to the point you feel a post needs to be run by a lawyer before posting it as folks will often work harder to tear a post down the just simply add to it they can’t seem to help it.

Don’t get me wrong some folks go looking for a fight from the start just to stir the pot a big difference between that and ruining a helpful thread just to do it. There are lots of ways drama gets introduced on here I see guys that ask questions to start getting a response then never post on the thread they started because their job is done.

Peoples behavior has always been my thing just learn to see what a person is really doing vs what they are saying it’s often not the same thing.

Not everyone grew up with that banter and would rather just not to talk to someone than to hear their constant smart arse comments. This isn't smartarse.com, its trapperman.

There's only so much information to share. I'd be curious how many that post regularly are really trapping?

Wolfie how come you don't post more about your trapping experiences?

I enjoyed his posts before he started posting all the bird pictures even more. He put a lot of effort into making excellent informational trapping related posts. His post on muskrat floats was tremendous.

Many of them have came and gone because of this and it's often that they are just so sensitive that they can't take it if someone simply asks why they do it the way that they do. They feel they should not be questioned, how dare people doubt them.

Driving members away and keeping new ones from posting will accomplish nothing for our ranks just to stroke some narcissists bully egos. Just an excuse to play reindeer games it has nothing to do with promoting anything positive in any way candy coat it all you want. The ones saying everyone needs a thicker skin have thin skins just pay attention the next time.

I would like to see more pics and write ups about kids and families out trapping even if they are just catching grinners. With fur prices down there is less pressure to put up big numbers so trappers should have more time to take a kid/s or the family out and enjoy being outside and quality time together.

We need more FHA news releases. Those always incite multi-page threads regarding the woes and pitfalls of shipping fur to the auction.

If thick skin is required how many people will fit that category so it seems there is not an environment that supports those people often. If you notice new people seem to go poof pretty quick even with a decent welcome so where do they go and why did they go?

If the culture is survival of the fittest the same people will keep doing what they are doing with no change to the culture that’s offered or people will move along.

I am a new member here, and just so you know, you all are an intimidating bunch. I have followed the threads and read through the archives for years. Most of you have forgot more about trapping than I will ever know. I feel like I know a lot about some of you and would love to accidently meet you some day. That being said, my pappy taught me that you learn more by listening than by talking. So, I think I will just sit here and keep my mouth shut.

Was ALOT of info when the place first started, several get in long winded disagreements about this or that then you type out a long detailed post giving your two cents and the whole post would go POOF! Never to be seen again, in time alot just quit wasting their time since it wasn't going to last long enough for anyone to see it anyway.

Then came the Utube hero's who just caught their first coon arguing with veteran guys who have been at it for 30 or more years so they all shut up and just watch now also.

This post has me thinking back besides Matt Jones who was a coon catching machine there was another guy that was on here all the time from Iowa. I won't get his name right I think it was Dave Pluger. They use to tease him about working for Groney because he always got better prices. Anyway where did he go?

Then there was that other guy that lost his shirt at NAFA.
Used to catch around a thousand coon a month and did a nice job of putting them up.

Everything changes with time.

I see daily here one thing that every outdoors forum exhibits.

Certain people makes a post and very soon, a known member will soon chime in to that person but seldom will respond to the many others.

When Kristen makes her yearly post with pics, I can bet $$ it'll shake out of slumber a few that seldom ever post. Heck, I wait for it!

Wolfie. You start a lot of threads yourself but I seldom see you converse in others?

Cliques are a real thing on any forum.

Love him or hate him, Bocos input on trapping and fur handling is top notch yet few members respond.?

And to be fair, I'm guilty as heck myself. smile

If your inexperienced then you should spend more time trapping mice and less time on tman talking about it.

I dont care if people respond to my trapping or fur handling posts,I do try to answer any questions though.
I know people like just looking at pics, like I do,and I know they are looking by the count number of views.
So all is good B+B and thanks for looking.

I would love to see some of the archive topics brought back to life. When photobucket went away we seemed to lose a bunch of pictures that would/could be very helpful. I dont post much other than the occasional attaboy cause yall are a lot smarter than me and fur catching machines to boot. Im just a blind squirrel trying to find a nut.

I want someone knowledgeable to start a new post on guiding/blocking coyotes. How they do it with pictures. Seems like most of the archive info about that has lost its pics.

Swampwolf, crawl out of the swamp and show us some more predator sets! Yall could do a ridealong thread on my line, but only so many folks like to read about empty traps
