Just skinned a nice coyote but there has to be well over 100 cockle burrs in it. Worked for 30 mins last night and got them from the head/neck area and belly. One side of the ribs/flank is still heavily matted and full, I broke the handle out of my fur comb but can still use it for the most part. Is there an easier way and is the hide going to look decent after pulling out so much fur during removal?

Thank you for any help.

I think Boco has posted about this. I can’t remember what he said to use. Eric

You can use Kids No More Tangles. If they dont come out easily and with minimum fur attached...yeah the hide will look like it had mange by the time you get done.

Thank you for the replies. Wife picked up some tangle free shampoo. I might run by the farm store and get a bottle of mane and tail, if I can’t get the burrs out there is no reason to try and flesh, I would hate to lose the hide as it is very prime with no rubs, not worth much but I would like to tan it myself and keep,

That is something to keep in mind when setting traps or snares. Don't set in the burrs. I have never seen a nice coyote that had a hundred + burrs.

I'm pretty sure our coyotes and raccoon just go out of their way to roll in a cocklebur patch. There's be none on a big property and here they show up covered in the things.

Unfortunately if I didn’t set where there are burrs, I would eliminate well over half the acres I trap. This is right next to a grown up hog pasture. It is filthy with rabbits and rodents, thus the number of coyotes that are frequenting the area.

Pressure Washer 2000# Psi works. Lay them on the concrete and go to it. You will find what angle works best!

WE - 40 works well also on either your hunting or trap line dog or any catch that's covered in burrs .

I use a coarse fur comb and "Show sheen" from Tractor Supply. It's in the horse section.
I can assure you I wouldn't be working that hard to de-burr a coyote at this time of year, in this market though.
A fur buyer once told me, "Not everything you shoot or trap will have value." Even though it seems like a waste, they still do need to be managed.

Alas, that is not really what you asked! So..... Show sheen is my answer lol

I spent more time on it last night and the hair was extremely matted. I used coconut oil that the wife had bought a couple years ago and never used. Got most of it combed out and washed it. It is drying now. Will see what shape it is in tonight and flesh.

Yep. It has basically no value but I’m trying my hand at home tanning so if I mess it up no real loss other than time and a few supplies.
