After recent visit to optometrist I learned that cataract had progressed and corrective lens would not sharpen up vision so the next option is surgery. Has any one had the surgery and what type of lens did you opt for? My research on the surgery indicated that you could elect to have vision corrected for distance but would need reading glasses for close work. There is another optional lens that corrects for near and far vision, at additional cost of course. Looking for some first hand experience. Thanks

Had both eyes done and there is a thread in the Health forum about my experience.

But I will address you specific lens question here. I went with the standard distance correction lens for both eyes. The expensive lens that helps with near and far is a compromise and does not does not do a real good job on either distance. At least that is the way my Dr explained it to me. I had been seeing him for years and I trusted his opinion.

What I was really surprised about was the improvement I got in near vision with the standard far distance lens. My surgery was in 2020 and I have not worn glasses since. I do need a little help on occasion in low light, small print but my vision still checks 20/20 without correction.

There is a basic, $0 if you have Health Ins which SHOULD pay for it, basic lens plus $1500 PE, Toric $2500 PE, and expanded Range of Vision Lens $3500 PE. Your HI may pay for some of the cost(s). If you've worn glasses many years, you will definitely see an improvement and be glad you had it done! :-)

I paid cash to have it done to my left eye as it had an astigmatism that was getting worse. Although it was just beginning to get a cataract it wasn’t nearly far enough along for insurance to cover it. Super easy procedure and some of the best money I’ve ever spent.

This is my experience and understanding also. With the exception of needing over the counter grasses for reading -skinning. I've heard negative stories about the full correction lenses. I now have slightly better than 2020 distance vision. Before I was living in a fog and couldn't drive at knight.

Wife will be having the first of her two cataract surgeries this coming Monday. The 2nd one two weeks later. Lots of appointments for these two events, about 7 or so. She is having one eye with a basic lens which has no charge, and one with a Toric which is $1200 and we have paid that already. I have the very start of cataracts that were found 3 years ago but they have not progressed at all since, so I am hoping to bide some more time.

I had the tri focal lenses implanted , about a year ago. Both at the same time My cost was 6000.00 canadian. Very happy with them. Operation was less than an hour. I haven't wore glasses since. My last eye exam, my sight is 20 20. My sight had got so bad , that I couldn't see to shoot . Had to let a really nice buck walk, rather than wound him. I would go with the trifocals , they are expensive but worth it. Also don't need glasses to read or work on computor old243

Had my right eye done. It went real well. They also told me that my left eye has a cateract also but they are unsure how long before I need that taken care of. Would do it again. I noticed mine when I started shooting bow in the summer to get ready for hunting. Didnt realize that it was as bad as it was until I relied on that eye to aim. That was not good.

I had mine done. My problem was nighttime driving. Signs and oncoming cars were too glaring due to cataracts. I went with the first option you mentioned. The surgery was well worth doing. I do need reading glasses, but my long distance sight is still 20/20 and I have no problem with night driving anymore.

Must be nice to eat ice cream as fast as you want and not have to worry about brain freeze.
