New Jersey and Oregon were the only two . I think here in Oregon that just changed at least in rural areas anyway

Yeah, in NJ you can't pump your own gas. I live in PA but sometimes work in NJ. I got in trouble for pumping my own gas on that side of the Delaware River.

Eh...wot?

What about if the stations are closed? Are you allowed to pump then?

One minor loophole/gray area for NJ , if you are on a motorcycle , the attendant will hand you the nozzle so you can fill your tank while they operate the pump. I guess there was enough complaints for spilling/dribbling gas on the nice painted finish on the motorcycle's gas tank.

For those who don't ride a bike , there is a right way and a wrong way to fill a motorcycle's gas tank without spilling some. Sure as heck you don't want to spill gas on a guy's pricey new Harley.

Just what are they saving by not letting you pump gas? We did not even have to pay before we pumped until the oil boom. Then the stations all claimed they were having to many dive offs, and now we pay before we pump.

I think it was pushed through to create jobs , at least for NJ. The politicians claimed it was for safety. Typical.

I pulled into a gas station in Oregon several years ago and attempted to pump my own gas. An attendant ran out in a panic, he said that if I pumped the gas I might blow up the station. I think he was actually convinced of that.

His panic more likely was if he got caught letting you pump your own gas he could lose his job.

I'm from Oregon and after I retired from the military I made an appearance there and went to fill up myself, out of habit. Man the clerk went into a panic and gave me a 15 minute lecture on why I shouldn't be touching that pump. Boiled down to saving jobs. Oregon is a little behind the times. Fast food employees are next at $15 bucks an hour. That's another story I'll save for later. Today you just have to smile and wave , cus it's a joke out there!

There is just one state that still thinks you are too stupid to pump your own gas. New Jersey.

Says a lot about NJ!

Lol.....true.... laugh

A few years back , NJ had much lower gas taxes for the area , almost 25 cents a gallon less. If I was heading that way , I would try to arrive with a near empty gas tank to take advantage of it. I even would take a bunch of gas cans to fill as well.

Unfortunately , they raised the tax a couple years ago and it isn't as much of a difference anymore.

If I heard it right our governor made it where you can pump your own gas in rural areas but the gas stations have to charge the same amount as if the attendant pumps it.
When I was in high school I worked at a gas station, we pumped gas, washed the windshields, head light and checked the oil. None of that now

NJ voters voted this dumb law down but the Union got it changed back to the way it was.
