Long story short I ran into my old agriculture teacher from high school at the fleet farm and we got talking about beaver trapping. I mentioned I would bring some traps in and do a presentation on trapping in his wildlife class if he wanted. He thought that would be great and he also said I should bring in a beaver to skin for the class so I did!
I had no idea how interested these 9th grade kids would be in skinning a beaver! I had grabbed one beaver from home for me to skin for the class and I checked traps on my way to the school and I had 3 more beaver so I brought those with. I should have had a dozen beaver because most of the class wanted to try it. There were kids that I could tell had never seen an animal skinned out before and even those kids were coming up to check out the beavers feet and tail and touch the hides.

It’s this type of stuff that gets kids involved in trapping and even if they never set a trap in their life they saw trapping from a trappers viewpoint and not some anti on Facebook. I just wanted to share it with you all and give an idea to any of you that would be interested in doing something like this. Also a lot of game wardens usually bring furs into classes like this to show kids. It might be worth talking to your local warden and seeing if you could come on the same day. (Depending on your relationship with the game warden!)

Good stuff. Sometimes we bring a non trapper with us and they’re always amazed by the feet, claws, tails and just seeing the animals up close…..and the fur, everyone loves the feel of fur. Even folks that stopped on the road when they see me coming out of the bush heading to my truck with something. They always want to see it up close and so far, they tell me to keep crushing em…lol

Atta boy!

I partnered with a local Conservation Officer and did furbearer presentations for my daughter's Girls Scouts groups every year and her preschool.

Kiddos love to handle all the furs and antlers and stuff.

Now she's almost to high school and still likes to show my furs and mounts off to her friends who come over who haven't seen them yet.

Way to go Tyler. What a great way to expose young people to trapping and the outdoors. And at that age they are old enough to form their own opinions about it also.

very good , would like to see more of that

now bringing that nice meat down to home-economic and making a nice beaver stew or beaver chili would be extra super awsome

Does a beaver carry something I need to be concerned with?

Nice, another thought is you could work with the wood shop about building some skinning bucks to help with the beaver.
