I was going to pick up a dozen or so more coon traps for my 13 year old. I found some 1.5 sleepy Creek long springs , some 1.5 victor cs and some #2 victor cs.

Also found some #1 and #11 sleepy creeks and some #1 new house . I would like to have some long springs to try out but not sure we trap anything I would use a #1 for but would like to get at least one or two since they are available.

I think #2 cs Victors would used for everything up to and including yotes. But we already have more mb550s and Bridger #2 than we put out.

Honestly the only thing he is low on are 1.5 coil springs for coon since I have not bought any in 20 years and back then it was duke because i was broke and also road trapping ditches and theft was common. So he has been using the few remaining I still have.

I was thinking the 1.5 sleepy Creek long springs but not sure of the benefit of long springs be the victor cs.

Guess I should just get some of them all and add to the collection. But want more education. I'm sure. #11 would hold coon but will #1s.

I may pick up a few dozen what would you go with.

#11 Sleepy Creek for coons, I've caught and held a lot bigger animals with them!

I used to use #1 North Woods double coil spring strong little traps. I've got 3 or 4 dozen hanging in the barn. If its for a 13 year old and he wants to try a couple PM me with your address and I'll give him a few to try

Number 11 sleepy creeks are good. Do not by the sc 1.5 longsprings.

Providence Farm,

I sent you a private message regarding some used traps I have that you might be interested in.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Usually, if something gets into a #11, they don't get out until you let them out.

If you had to bed the trap I would lean towards a coil spring versus long spring traps. The 1 1\2 coil spring is very versatile and can be used for many different critters.

Get Duke 1.5 CS…I modified all of mine with #2 music wire and outside laminations. Then you have a trap that can be used for coon, rats, mink, fisher, and fox. I’ve caught and held beaver in them.

I’ve held quite a few coon in number ones but went pretty much to number twos for the bigger pan.

I started using sleepy creek #11 traps a year ago. I got rid of everything else after using those last season. I use some Northwoods #1’s and some sleepy creek #1’s for rats and squirrels, but all others get the #11, till I hit coyotes. Even fox don’t get out of the #11. You can never have to many #11 sleepy creeks.

Why do I carry 10mm? Because shooting twice is just silly.

I have held a beaver toe nail in them, and once an otter I had to release. I started out with dukes and they worked well for a cheap trap the may get stolen but since they copied mb so bad even the name i prefer to get American made if I can. And. Now the prices are so close anyway.

Thanks to this thread I have a good line on some good traps for the boy. He is fired up went out and reset and baited what he had out today. I think if I can find my slide cables and some wire we will go pilut some sets over at a friend's with a nice creek the runs into the Ohio river. In years past we have caught beaver, otter, red fox, coyote, coons, and the elusive opossum. He has been talking about catching mink and rats.

But I dad has only ever caut rats for a friend when they were destroying the dam of his lake and it was simply sticking 110s in a run. And mink have always just been in coon sets so it's time to do some reading.

I have half a dozen SC #11's, wish I had 5 dozen.. great traps, I love #1 1/2 longsprings. great rat and mink traps but they are not great coon traps. go with the #11's or a good 1 1/2 coil.

I have parted ways with a few of my foothold coon traps, but I can't bring myself to sell any of my Montgomery #11s yet.
