For Moyles, hide needs to be properly fleshed and dried, correct? Whereas Sleepy will do fleshing, and even skinning, for a fee of course. I’m not skilled nor have the time to do a full put-up (sorry Boco!), so I have used Sleepy for beaver, muskrat, coyote, otter and gray fox. And will be sending them a coon, grinner, and bobcat this year. Hides are nice and soft when they come back, my only complaint is the ears seem to get flattened and deformed, not sure if that’s me doing something wrong or just the nature of the beast with the tanning process? Curious if anyone has thoughts on this? You need to rehydrate those ears and reshape them. Get yourself some "soft spring clamps" like these: https://www.menards.com/main/p-1444...ntent=2442268&utm_campaign=Tool+ShopTake a clean rag, soak it good, and squeeze out enough water so it's not sloppy wet. Use a spring clamp to clamp the rag around the flattened ear. Allow to set for overnight. Next day, remove clamp and rag and see if you can "pry" the ear up and into its normal position. If it's still too stiff, wrap that damp rag around what you have again and clamp, giving it another 12 hours or so. Once the ear is pliable, take clothes pins and pin the ear so it's standing upright. Another trick is to take a cleaned plastic milk jug and cut the bottom corners to fit into the ear as a form, then clothes pin that in place. Give it a day or so to dry, and then you should have your ears standing upright. If they're flopping around or out of position, get a leather needle and some dental floss. Sew the base of the ear into the pelt so the ear stands up. Maybe you've noticed the lips come back from the tannery stiff and squashed up against the face. Do the same with this area. You shouldn't need to sew these into place. With a little practice you can make those tanned pelts look real good having the ears standing upright. Also, sew any "big eyes" closer together or holes in the pelt also.

I have used Moyles for years and last year I sent to Sleepy Creek last year because shipping is much less than sending to Moyles. I won't use Sleepy Creek again. My fox came back with holes and even missing fur. I skinned and stretched the fox, with no holes in them, the day they were caught so I know the problem wasn't on my end. l be going back to Moyles this year and pay the additional few dollars to have my skins done right.
57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

I’ve always used Tubari with great results. Quick turnaround and pleasant to deal with. Never lost a fur or had damage or any issues at all. Have you tried to use them lately ? I have heard through the scuttlebutt grapevine that Tubari is not currently taking in anymore pelts for tanning until such time as they move their dressing operation to a new location. w

I have heard through the scuttlebutt grapevine that the New Jersey DNR have shut "Tubari Limited" down due to environmental pollution issues, and that they are not currently taking in anymore pelts for tanning until such time as they move their dressing operation to a new location in order to address those environmental concerns. w I haven’t tried yet this year. Hope that’s not the case cause they’ve always done great for me

I have been dealing with Tubari for 27 years they are local to me. They are in process of finding a new location there landlord raised the rent thru the roof. The entire crew there have become friends of mine over the years. Most there have known my daughters since they were just out of diapers, and they are now in there 20s. There work has always been exellent for me. And I tan a ton of fur each year. I hope and wish them the best on finding a new place to open up.

I’ve sent fur to sleepy creek in Iowa the last couple of years and will do so again this year. Great place to deal with. They get all my business. What did you do replace the arm covers on your recliner

Does moyles make leather from salted deer hides or can anyone suggest a tannery that offers that? Moyles does not do leather tanning. I think there is a place in Minnesota that does but can’t think of the name right now.
