My mom has been battling cancer for the last 7 years.
Started out as ovarian cancer. It went into remission.
They put her on Keytruda to help manage it and keep it status quo.
She didn't do well on it. It made her very weak and sick. She would go into the bathroom and kind of slump down. My dad wasn't strong enough to get her up off the floor, so they would have to call for a lift assist. She really liked the one medic that always came to help her up. We teased her that she would call the ambulance service to see if he was on duty so she could see him.
It came back last year in the form of lymphoma. They aren't sure if it metastasized from the ovarian cancer or not. She wouldn't let them do aa biopsy.
Then shortly after sort of getting that under control she started peeing blood. They did CT scans and ultrasounds and couldn't see anything. Then she agreed to allowing them to do a cystoscope. Basically they went into her bladder and took a gander. They found a 2 inch in diameter tumor. They removed it, but couldn't get the whole thing because it had grown fingers thru the bladder wall. She again wouldn't let them open her up to remover the fingers.
She told my dad and us kids she was tired of fighting and was going to put her fate in the hands of God.
She had a good Thanksgiving and Christmas. About 3 weeks ago we had a house full of people and she enjoyed herself immensely.
Shortly thereafter she decided that hospice is what she needed.
They brought a hospital bed in and she insisted it be put in the bedroom, as her and my dad hadn't slept apart for more than 2 weeks since they got married 62 years ago.
My sister moved in with them and has been living there since she was put on hospice. She told me the other day the end was near and she ready. I just told he to go that we would take care of dad. She smiled. Then she looked at my son and told him it was his job to get the hospital bed out so grandpa could have his bedroom back. He wears his heart on his sleeve and had to leave the room. He went into the bathroom and she told him to spray cause she didn't want to go out with the smell of poop in the air. It was her attempt at humor so we all giggled. The initial thoughts last week that she had about 3-4 weeks left. Yesterday the nurse came in and she asked him how much longer. He told her that he wouldn't couldn't say. She gave him a look that told him she knew he knew (she's a former nurse) and not to beat around the bush.
My nephew, who lives in Atlanta flew in last week, and he called me and told me it absolutely killed him to leave. I just told him that she got to see him while she was still pretty lucid, and be thankful for that.
He told my sister that there was very noticeable decline since the day before ( sleeping more, talking to people who died a long time ago, and other hallucinations) and that if anyone needed to see her to come this weekend. Mom told the nurse she just wanted to go to sleep and not wake up.
Last night she woke up and her and dad had a very long convo. He said it was good and she made him promise to take us kids on a fishing vacation. Then proceeded to chew him out because he got her water from the bathroom tap and not the filtered water from the kitchen. She said it tasted like crap.
She isn't in any pain. She does get leg spasms every once in awhile and they don't seem to be bothering her.
So if you're a praying person say some prayers that she goes in her sleep like she wants. Say a few for my dad. They've been together since highschool and he's going to be very lost without her.
