[quote=panaxman]My step son is a union commercial electrician, been laid off since before Thanksgiving. Philadelphia area. Private independent guys I know are busy.

Ah good old 98, they have/had major leadership legal issues the last few years, Having said that many of my close friends are union and are as good as anyone in there respective trade. I myself never saw the need to join the union as our packages are very similar, although that golden 90 of the fitters would be sweet~if it remains solvent.

my UPS told me yesterday that their terminal already layed off 3 drivers - not management.

I saw a driver yesterday as well and he mentioned drivers being let go. He feels he’s safe being he has a lot of years in.

It would surprise me if 12000 management only were let go, that’s a ton. I’d think some rank and file are mixed in there as well. I could be wrong.

I wonder what the coal miner union thinks of Biden?

A bit of a conflicted statement isn't it?

I guess it roughly translates to, "We'll endorse Sleepy Joe's plan to hate on coal as long as we get billions in taxpayer money to spend on useless crap technologies and line our pockets."

Eh...wot?

back when it was Bush vs. Gore, I saw a "Carpenter's Union, Local_xxxx for Gore" bumper sticker on a beat up old red pickup. I laughed out loud as (at the time) Gore was touting his plan to shut down logging on the National Forests.

I thought...those dumbarses don't know where lumber comes from!

From Reuters: "Higher labor costs from the new contract with its Teamsters union are also squeezing profits at UPS, which expects to report its lowest consolidated operating margin of the year in the first quarter, UPS Chief Financial Officer Brian Newman said on the call with analysts.
UPS said it has been winning back business that went to rivals like FedEx during the company's tumultuous labor talks that wrapped up last summer. Sixty percent of that business has returned, Tome said."

I've been on both sides. There is plenty of dead weight on both sides of the management/labor vector . I have found that its a lot easier to gripe when you've only seen one side, which is where most employees are. It's like kids complaining about how they have terrible parents because they make rules they don't like. Then they become parents themselves and most of the time see things differently.
Get all you can get, but realize there is a limit (unless its the government spending-lol).

Dunno about that, I've lately read a lot about robotic train and railroad maintenance, as well as computer guided/driven trains. Won't need any rail workers soon. Most all labor can be replaced or diminished with robotics and computers in the very near future. That's what AI, will do, and management won't be exempt.

Nope salary people never paid my wages but they sure took money out of all the hourly employees pockets with the Bud light bs which as of January 20 , 2024 is still down 30% but the UPS driver did deliver my pension buyout checks today early I was impressed and with the 3 for 1 Walmart split yesterday it’s been a real good week so far

not sure I'm following you...you mean your stock price fell (part of your wages?) when your marketing department screwed up with the transgender debacle?

I sold the little stock I had left at the beginning of the year since I knew I was retiring but it’s still in the mid 60 ‘s a share so it hasn’t taken a major hit

This sounds like Yellow 2.0

The 12,000 being cut should be thankful for the severance and move on. It's the managers that are left that are going to suffer.

Union's destroyed everything in the south so we don't have enough of them now to matter. But im very confused at UPS laying off anyone as down here a friend of mine deliver's for them every year around Christmas cause they are so short handed! Their driver's are run to death, wage's have went wayyyyyyyyy up yet still hard to find and keep dependable drivers. I quit using the fools 20 years ago when they destroyed a package i had insured and never paid me for it, just kept giving me more hoops to jump through till i gave up so I really don't care what they do union or not.
