Looking into opening red squirrel trapping in Idaho. Currently in Idaho you can trap the non native fox squirrel that lives in towns (no season or regs on them) but not the native red squirrel. With squirrel pelts bringing decent money and another opportunity for trappers (especially youth) I think it is a great idea. Also, they are commonly caught in marten traps and probably just tossed.
Red squirrel hunting season is Aug 30th to March 31st with a bag limit of 8 per day and possession of 24. Our marten season runs from Nov 1st to Jan 31st. When I have bounced this idea off of others they have commented maybe we should align it with marten season in case folks are going to "claim" they are squirrel trapping when they are actually marten trapping. Second question, I doubt they are going to want to go higher than that daily bag limit of 8 per day for trapping if hunters can only get 8. If that is the case, folks shouldn't be setting more than a few traps so they don't go over their daily amount? My main questions are:
#1 Does your state allow trapping/snaring of squirrels (not invasive city squirrels)?
#2 What kind of regulations do they have on them?
#3 Also, does your state allow snaring of snowshoes and what regulations do they have on them?
Thanks

Red squirrells are actually furbearers, with guard hair and underfur, unlike the bigger north american squirrels.
Here there are no quotas for trapping them as they are very prolific and are in no danger of overharvest.
There is however a season on red squirrels-it runs the same as other land fur like marten and lynx,Oct 25 to end of february.
For snowshoe hares, anyone with a small game hunting licence or a trapping licence can snare snowshoe hares in the north, and where and when snaring is allowed in central and south Ont.For a long time there was no closed season and no limits on them, that changed a few years ago with most trappers and hunters being on board with a 6 daily limit and season from sept to end feb.
Red squirrells can only be hunted under a trapping licence on your trapline.

In New York State, Red squirrels are considered a non-game species
and thus unprotected with no set season and no bag limit.

They may be taken in any number, at any time, by any means.

Grey, Black, and Fox squirrels are all considered game species
and are thus protected with a hunting season and bag limits.

They may be hunted but not trapped except
by licensed ADC & nuisance wildlife agents.

Alaska has no closed season or bag limit for red squirrels or rabbits. We snare both and also use #0's and the wooden rat traps with the big cheese pan. We put snare poles over the big middens and we use fish oil on the rat traps.

They are easy to tan and sell for good money when tanned.

I recall dropping furs off at one of FHA's stops one time and the young guy in front of me (looked to be about 18-20) had half a dozen squirrel hides along with his other furs. George did a double take on them, I don't think he was used to getting any, but he went ahead and took them without any questions or arguments. Maybe the kid hunted them, but the rest of his furs were trapped.
I knew that there was a hunting season on them, I met some guy from back east one time who was hunting them here, but had in my mind that you couldn't trap them, without knowing for positive.

No trapping season on squirrels in NC. Hunting only!

Trapping them in damage control situations requires a permit.

Wallayed, they averaged $5.73 at our last Idaho sale. But raw is better, tanned squirrels barely sold for more.

I sell tanned squirrels for 12 and tanned weasels for 30.I normally get 40 to 50 of each per marten season, but three times that some years.
Had to raise my prices this year a bit due to inflation.used to be 10 and 25 for quite a while.

it will be an up-hill battle
under a trapping license in Manitoba you can trap or shoot red squirrels in the Open Trapping area
years back use to hold one box (50) squirrel hunts with a group of other hunters best day was 250+
since then the marten have moved in there and a noisy squirrel is a dead squirrel

I’m not sure on red squirrels in Oregon, I think it’s a closed season.

Snowshoes fall under the definition of predatory animals (lumped in with jacks, cottontails, nutria, coyotes etc). and are open season all year with no restrictions on methods of take.

In Wisconsin, red squirrels are an unprotected species ( p4, 2023 Wisconsin Trapping Regulations) and may be trapped year-round by persons possessing a trapping license. A trapping license is not required for landowners or occupants trapping trapping unprotected species causing damage or are otherwise a nuisance. Unprotected species have no bag limits. All other trap regulations are enforceable.

Animals protected at all Times (p4, 2023 Wisconsin Trapping Regulations) The following wild animals are designated protected and have no open season: ... American marten, white or albino deer, wolverine and any other species designated protected, endangered or threatened.

Marten Restoration Areas Open to Forms of Dryland Trapping (p19, 2023 Wisconsin Trapping Regulations) ... cable restraints, cage or box traps, weasel boxes with an opening 1 3/8 inches or less and footholds with a pan tension device of four pounds or greater may be used for species that have an open season. No other traps on dryland are legal within the gray highlighted areas of the Pine River and Calm Lake marten restoration areas.
Similar regulations apply to the Apostle Islands marten restoration areas.

Please Contact the DNR about Incidental Take (p19, 2023 Wisconsin Trapping Regulations) if you catch a martin in a cage trap, please call 715- xxx-xxxx so that department staff can potentially obtain scientific information about the animal. If you intend to trap near a known marten population, please review the marten brochure.
