Yep well my company has one of the first one. Very interesting, apparently it's hybrid, think it's mainly for fleep work and it's still going though trial runs and the like. From what I hear the crew likes it. Just plugs in at a charging station on the dock. Hopefully it's a good thing

What's it sound like?

One thing I could almost always count on was hearing a towboat coming regardless of the weather. The only dead spot being the most dangerous, directly in front of a full tow.

Generally, if I was running lines I'd hear it coming up or down long before it rounded the bend giving me plenty of time to get out of the way.

That is interesting. At least they had the sense to make it run off fuel for a backup. Straight electric would end up the definition of dead in the water.

I can see where a hybrid tow boat could be useful

if you have it at a dam and get a call for assistance you can unplug and start moving in seconds firing up the diesels while you get into position

that isn't all that new WWII subs ran on battery surfaced at night recharged and took on fresh air then dove again

I can understand hybrids that when you run outta juice an engine saves your butt.

A neighbor had a Toyota that was hybrid and he put a bunch of miles on it.

Even electric shag trucks make sense as long as they don't leave the yard.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

diesel electric has always made sense in High torque low speed applications

that is what your train engines are they don't have to change the drive line direction to get power to the wheel

on a tug where you might want multiple screws to push different directions and you want a lot of power to the relatively low speed high torque screw and you can put the engines up higher get them more air , easier to work on then put the electric motors where you need them. and also get a shallower draft.
