what is the best water trap dip. I have used speed dip and my water traps were rusted the first month.

I’m super happy with my method, mix acetone and rustolium rusty metal primer. Dip the traps and it drys fast, leaves a brown film everywhere, and seem to last a fair amount of time. Last time I bought a five gallon jug of acetone from a paint shop, only used about 3.5-4 gallons of it, mixed one gallon of primer and a quart of flat black paint, came out chocolate milk colored, works great, I mix this in a mortar mixing tube from home depo, that allows me to even dip the 12x16 body grips.

You don’t want it to slash in your eyes, so yes be careful. I dipped mine in the summer while dealing with dying and waxing footholds. Also I’m outside. It thins the paint way down and while it dissipates drys the traps almost instantly. I wish I had time every year to do them but only get around to it every couple years. I like how it leaves a supper thin coat, that is not sticky or gummy feeling. And it holds up well. I use my traps year round so I need them to hold up.

And what’s not bad for you?

X2 on what wws contributed. I’ve been using it for years. On new traps it will get kind of dinged up at first and those places will start to get some rust, but follow up the next season and that rust will really hold the new coat. Like wws says, it dries quick and isn’t sticky. I never have time in the summer so I like to put my traps next to the wood stove and treat them while they’re warm.

I just spit coffee all over my computer screen reading that one.

I use acetone and rusty metal primer on my traps and never had an issue with them. It holds up.

I used the same mixture of paint and acetone. A couple of years ago I bought a gallon of the Rusty Metal primer and a gal of flat black from Sherwin Williams. The guy at the counter knew what I wanted the paint for and recommended a paint thinner. I work my traps up in summer, so the evaporation rate is usually high. The paint guy explained, different paints should use different thinners and in different temperatures with evaporation rates. I bought a can of the thinner he recommended and a can of acetone for cleanup. Most of the time with acetone I had to stop and thin the paint down several times. With the thinner the evaporation rate was a lot slower; I could finish dipping my traps and the consistency of the paint remained the same. Saved me time and all my traps are covered the same where with acetone the first traps were good and 30 traps later the paint was getting thicker than I like it to be.
I cannot remember the name of the thinner I used, but time of year (temp) a salesman should be able to help you. The cost was about the same.
Theres a lot of big high dollar boats companies where I live. All the boat companies have winter and summer resin for glassing. The resins are made with different evaporation rates.

With the left over mixture, how good does it store?

Latex paint. I gallon of paint and 2 gallons of water. Keep It stirred up because the paint likes to settle.
