What are some tips to keep cows out of my traps. Have 150 acres of cattle pasture on our property and kept getting traps sprung by cow. And yes it was cows because I could see tracks all the way up to it. TIA

try a step down dirthole. dig an 6 or 8 in deep trench a foot long and make dirthole in one end and trap in the other. not bullet proof but sure helps with cows an deer.

Basically the only way is to set in the sections that don't have cows. The big stepdowns are an option but you can't have rain in the forecast with them.

Don't let the cattle see you, especially if you carry your gear in a bucket.

Wasting your time trying anything inside that pasture. Get out of the pasture.

If you are certain that is the place to be, since this is your place, cordon off a corner or small piece of it with a temporary single strand electric fence. One high enough for coyotes to walk under but cows can't. About the highest clip on a step in electric fence post out to do it.

Can't say about cows, but deer seem to be as attracted to the call lure used on a coyote set as the coyotes are. Maybe cows are too?

One other consideration.......if you actually catch a coyote in a pasture that has cows in it, and cows can see the coyote, all bets are off. With some cows, there is no telling what they are going to go thru to get at it.

OK. I’m in cows 365 a year. It’s not always easy. Don’t let them see you. Don’t use urine. Don’t use any thing with FISH in it. Slide your trap sets under a tree. Where cow can get to them but Coyote can. Old cows are easier to trap around than young cows. Forget = showy sets. Be on location under a bush or tree is best. Will think more on this. Post up more Cow Tips latter. Got to get some sets in ground. Cold is coming

I was told that if you make your set Inside of a truck tire you won't have worry about cows. Not sure how a coyotes will react to that type of set. But I have tried It and have caught coons. I didn't set Inside the tire I set the trap about 3" from the edge of the tire and placed the bait Inside the tire. I would assume that placing a tire In cow pasture would attract cows but I don't think they would step on your trap. And I used the tire as a drag.

Auctally just learned that my dad is moving the cows up to the front pasture between our house and the road. So I will have the back 150 acres all to myself.

Had cows disprove that theory for me this fall. They just either kicked the trap or kicked the tire over the trap

I tried the tire set once and the cows used the tire as a soccer ball. My advice is to set outside the pasture

We have dairy cattle her which are very used to being around humans so they are into everything. I gave up pasture trapping decades ago. Did catch two reds in a dry cow pasture in the late 90s. They were both kits and both were stomped to pieces when I got there. Back when a red had more value too.
