What salt-mineral block do you recommend?

50/50 salt/dical phosphate. I know a guy that spend a LOT of money flying one of the best deer biologists in the country up to his land to learn this.

I've watched turkeys fight squirrels and squirrels bluff deer over this mixture mixed into the soil.

I've found with any "lick", it's most often used in the growth periods of summer and hit more by does and fawns come fall, but bucks still show up to them.

Kelly Harris deer mineral recipe is all I use. He was a good guy active on Bowsite.com and many on there use his formula. We lost him to cancer several years ago.

"I always buy 50 lbs bag of dicalcium phosphate, 50 lbs bag of trace mineral salt, bag of powdered molasses. I dig a 3 ft hole wide and about 18 inches deep. I chop up the dirt really good, shovel in the ingredients with dirt 1 shovel full at a time. I mix it up really good and keep doing it until the hole is filled back up.

We currently cannot put out minerals due to Wisconsin's ridiculous CWD restrictions.

I used the same recipe prior to the ban and I would try to get Redmond Mineral Salt-it's the exact same as Trophy Block and comes out of the same factory.

I have used the 2 parts stock salt to 1 part di cal and 1 part trace minerals for the past 5 years and know that it gets hammered. On 170 acres, I run 3 licks and go through a full batch of 200 lbs about every 18 months.

I have been told and read that added sugars, molasses, etc., promote tooth decay, which could inhibit bucks from reaching maturity if that is your goal. Much like documented tooth wear in areas with very sandy soil. I can't speak to any of that as truth, but the 2:1:1 mixture works for me.

Deer need minerals but not much science supporting antler growth. Great marketing to get money out of your pockets.

That was interesting watch, thanks Eagleye.
We could probably go back and forth on this topic for awhile. Usually the ones selling the product are the ones professing how important minerals are. Its not that minerals arent important, we know they are. The question is whether or not supplementing deer beyond the amount they already receive naturally through their foraging is going to make a big difference. According to this article and the studies conducted by two universities...the answer is no. Slightly bigger bodies possible, but not antlers. These folks could be entirely wrong, and if I was allowed to place minerals for deer here in Michigan, I would....its cheap enough. However, I would do it more for the does who need the extra mineral in spring summer while nursing fawns.
Not meant to start any squabbling, but it still appears to me that there is not much science to support it.

I personally feel like improving the biodiversity, available nutrients and habitat needs for the specific type animal you are targeting is going to produce results. Improving only one thing won't do much, so studying if minerals make antlers lager, yeah probably not, but as one part of a larger plan it will probably aid in killing larger and more mature deer and having a larger stronger population on the property to maximize genetic potential.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Get this or something similar. These does not contain food so is therefore not considered baiting. And it is just as good or better than the fancy trophy rock stuff made especially to make deer hunters take money out of their wallets.
