A Patterson man was arrested Monday for allegedly trapping squirrels and spray-painting them red, according to the Putnam County SPCA.

The SPCA said the county's probation department notified the organization and New York State Environmental Conservation police that a 62-year-old man had been trapping squirrels in metal cages and dying them "Apple Red" using a spray paint can.

The SPCA said the man was interviewed by the organization and police on Jan. 13. The accused said he released the squirrels at another location in the town after painting them. Two traps with red spray paint on them were found at the man's home.

A Patterson man was arrested for allegedly trapping and spray painting squirrels with red paint and releasing them into the wild. Putnam County SPCA said two traps with red spray paint and the can were discovered at the suspect's home.
The individual was charged with three counts of poisoning or attempting to poison animals, a misdemeanor, and other violations of state environmental conservation laws.

SPCA detectives said it is still unclear why he trapped and painted the animals. He is currently on probation for an unrelated crime.

Why does it feel like i read the same story 10 times reading this. These articles drive me nuts when it repeats itself 10 plus times.

Are people stupid nowadays and can't understand what happened after the they read it once.

Genuinely curious because I see this style of articles popping up more and more.

My guess is he was trying to see if the problem squirrels were coming back or if there were just that many of them. If he had just killed them he would have been fine. Geez.

So essentially a weekend trapper and now its gonna reflect on the rest of us badly. This is the stupid stuff that fuels anti's

If these were grey, black, or fox squirrels, they are considered game animals
with bag limits and a season & protected by law.

If they were red squirrels, they are considered non-game & not protected
and may be taken (killed) by any means.

Depending on which, he may have a legal remedy if they were red (pine) squirrels.

He was from Putnam county. Very close to NYC

Another jerk from the NYC area being a blight for the rest of the state.

I doubt he was a "trapper" and would rather believe it was a homeowner that had squirrel problems and was too cheap to hire a professional.

I'm about 10-15 miles from Patterson , NY

It is about 45mins from Patterson to NYC , just about on the edge for commuter range to NYC.

Could be that goofy NY guy trying to start a red squirrel ranch but all he had was grey ones?

I don't see what's so terrible about what he did ...
My friend did the same thing , to see if the squirrels came back into his yard , after releasing them about 1 mile away ...

Ppl paint their own hair pink, green, blue....what's the big deal?

I'd love to trap some black squirrels and turn them loose in the neighborhood but I'm afraid the town would go to heck.

Sorry Cragar, didn't mean anything against you. Just don't like NYC and how their values and people/polititians are the reason for so many problems in our state.

I imagine there is some heat loss with the paint jobs or that’s what they will go with is my guess. Most relocations use a minimal 5 mile range for smaller critters.

No offence taken. Patterson is kinda nice , suburbia , with a few large tracks of land left , still some farms left , not over developed yet.

We have NYC people here , they know nothing about wildlife but make great ADC customers. And they tip well , used to tipping heavy in NYC.

I will agree with you 101% , NYC and close to it are filled with cityidiots who totally screw up the rest of NY.

he talked to them and they identified as red squirrels so he was just helping them be themselves.

And he’s a crack addict then they wouldn’t touch the guy.

I'm in SW Connecticut. 6 miles to NYS.

Funny thing though.....been living here my whole life only been to NYC maybe 30 times my whole life , mostly at airports.
I don't have much of a need to go there except for the airports.
