I haven’t been able to find much about this in the archive but just out of curiosity and I hope this isn’t a silly question. But what are some of the most putrid smelling baits you have used for coyotes? I trap in the desert and haven’t had any luck in a little over a week(not even tracks coming in to check a trap out). I’m trying to be patient while also trying to be optimistic about trying new things that may or may not work. Any info is appreciated. Thanks fellas

Gator Bait from Predator Control Group is probably the raunchiest smelling bait if thats what you're going for.

Theres some others that were worse but that was mainly due to them going bad as they werent from established dealers and weren't preserved probably. Neighbors dogs loved to roll on those baits that went bad. Im sure the neighbors loved it..

Thank you sir. Have you ever personally used it? If so how well or bad did it go?

I would try a call lure or bait/lure with skunk. Better yet set on their tracks. Putrid smelling bait will get them rolling like Sniper said.

Cavens hiawatha valley(bait). Milligan and hawbaker call lures. Cavens violator 7 all these have a good skunk kick to them. There are a lot of others but these come to mind right away.

Did OK with it, other baits seem to do better here for me. Your mileage may vary.

The grossest bait I can think of would be the soggy bits of food left in the drain catch after you’re done doing dishes.

Man that stuffs gross!

Putrid baits down here are possum magnets. I try and shy away from anything like that in a coyote set. If I could train possums and coons to only hit my DP’s I’d be a happy man!
When I start trapping this year I’m gonna experiment with something on the stinky side and see what it does. Not a putrid smell, just pure stank.

If you really want putrid/nasty bait, just take the stomach contents of the next coyote you catch and put it down a dirt hole. I’ve caught coyotes on it before, when a possum didn’t beat them to it.

Where I’m located we don’t have much oppossum let alone much raccoon unless you’re down in river beds. When I started out trapping my dad gave me some putrid smelling bait and that first season I had a hay day with coyotes and foxes and thought maybe something strong here would at least get their attention to check the trap out cuz like I said, I haven’t even had tracks near a trap yet.

EDIT: went out to check trap line this morning and got my first bobcat.. not what I’m going for but was cool to have something on the line.

I chop up a lot of frozen carcasses for bait in winter.Fresh, and some at different stages of taint for different uses and for different species.
Tainted frozen beaver has a sharp smell that lasts a long time and will call predators from a long waysSome species are not interested in eating tainted meat and other species prefer it,but it works as a long distance call for all.
I just chopped up a couple wolf carcasses that have been hanging frozen for a couple weeks. They have a very strong smell much different than the tainted beaver but the same as far as long lasting smell and carry a long way.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Ask anyone that has been in our fish rendering facility. They will tell you how bad that odor is when it is in full production run. It penetrates everything. Pretty potent material. You can smell it downwind a long ways. Hard to say how far. It brings vultures from Georgia. smile

You’re allowed up to 6 tags a season in Utah, unfortunately had no tags for him so I let him go. Going to go into DWR office tomorrow and get a few before the end of season in March

I did that. Removed the stomach contents from a coyote a few weeks ago. It was composed of what appeared to be primarily deer hair. It had almost no odor that I could detect. There were no partially digested mice or meat of any kind. So, either I have Covid nose or whatever he was eating didn't cause an odor. I may try another and see if its got the good stink.

If all it had was hair, then he didn’t have a full stomach. You’ll know when it’s full of nastiness!

I have emptied hundreds of cat stomach contents over the years. You wonder how you caught some of those cats that had a couple pounds of torn and swallowed meat in their bellies. I guess the offering was too good not to let the opportunity pass by.

Yes, the contents are quite sour if it is freshly eaten meat and has been in there just a few hours. When it has all been basically processed by the stomach acids the hair, bone, sticks and small rocks is all that is left to push thru.

I just cleaned the stomach contents of several coyotes in the last few days. One had several rocks about nickel and dime sizes in the stomach with a bunch of deer hair. All else was sludge meat.
