What is a good reasonably priced red gun mounted kill light? I would like to have positive identification out to 300 yards max and a pressure switch.

I have a varmint light vx-1. It's only good to about 150 yards which I made work. I got my gear out today to check over since this extreme cold might be a good time to call and the pressure switch no longer works. Time for something better.

I thought I was old school. Seems like everyone has went thermal now.

Dogs are tough to call in here especially since this thermal craze started. It's fun to try even though success is rare. Too hard to keep many footholds going in the snow and our cable restraints are useless.

I use a Wicked Hunting Light. It is 3 in 1 so the lens can be red, green, or white. It came with a good picatinny rail to mount to the tube of a scope, quick detach mount, and you can add a pushbutton to the stock to turn on and off with your front gun hand. I don't use that button but it does come with. You can adjust the beam intensity. Comes with rechargeable batteries that last all night even in -20F weather. I really cant thing of anything I'd change. maybe a little bit lighter? but it is pretty durable so I'm not sure that would even be an improvement. I'd buy another in a heartbeat if this one ever disappeared or broke. You can also get a 4 in 1 with IR in case you ever go the night vision route. I'm not really sure how far you would be able to identify stuff to, but 300 sounds reasonable.

Edit: I have the A67iC, just for reference.

I see the same thing in North Dakota. Everyone is going with a thermal but I am not convinced that it is the "End all be all of night hunting". Besides the steep initial cost and typically annoying battery life, the coyotes that I seem to chase are not as foolish as they used to be. Too many night hunters using thermal, they are just as smart as they are during the day. Same thing could be said about using a light, but I have $200 invested instead of $4000 and can harvest just as much fur it seems. Just my observation.

I went through a lot of lights back in the day. I settled on the Coyote Light. The light can be dimmed down or brightened enough to see eyes 500 yards. The lens can be adjusted down to where its almost pinpoint or opened wide for large field of view. Not the cheapest but its an awesome light.

Before thermal I used and still have Wicked. A knob on top goes from white, green, to red. Like stated above it comes with 2 caps. One being a rheostat that will turn it on and control intensity. I’d slide that on the magazine of my AR.
I never hunted coyotes with it, only hogs and it worked good.

My son hunts coyotes with a thermal. He used to use a light, never again. Thermal is the way to. They are pricey. My cousin uses a thermal that cost over $10,000. But he can afford it

If they aren’t coming in when using a thermal, I don’t see them coming in using a light. At least with a thermal you can see them coming however far line of sight is.
I’m just learning this calling thing. Some nights you can’t beat them off and other nights you won’t see a thing. I’m picky about where and when I call. I have a lot of brush and have to wait for the right winds to hunt some of the higher spots. I do feel as though I’ve knocked back the population on my main property with trapping and night hunting. We don’t hear anymore like I used to, but that’ll all change once others realize there’s a territory wide open for the taking.
Lights would probably work fine for wide open places. I just used them to sneak in on hogs eating in front of a camera down here. I will say if you get a light, don’t ever pick up a thermal.

We have a couple of these and really like them, the mounts work well too for the scope clip on.
We have the E2, 300 ish yd ones.
Have shot with the light clipped on our 300wsm scope, works just fine.

Thanks guys. I will check out all these lights.

Wytex I was looking at those orion lights last night. Those look really good for the price.

Slush that's an interesting observation. I thought thermal would be 10 times more effective than a light. Unfortunately everyone and their whole family seem to be night hunting with thermal and the dogs are well educated.

I'm definitely not dropping the coin on thermal. I only go out calling 5-10 times a year. Sometimes I get way back in the woods and call in the daytime. It's just a way to enjoy winter when it gets to be a hassle to run traps.
