Application: Gravel Drives, smoothing rutted trail systems
What are the advantages to a land plane vs box scraper and vice versa, I probably could’ve added box blade to the comparison but I’d like to be able to have rippers to rough and grade the gravel areas.

The down fall of both is the short wheelbase of tractor and location of implement. As the rear wheels of your tractor drop into the dip , so does your attachment. A box blade will carry more material than a land plane. Probably a slight advantage on a dirt trail. It allows you to actually push or pull a volume of material to a void.

A land plane will do a much better job maintaining a gravel driveway.

Neither perform as well as a center mounted blade on a long wheel base like a grader.

Look up 7 way drag for the very best way to maintain a dirt or gravel road. Probably not an affordable solution for a homeowner, but you can build a three or a 4 way drag out of angle iron fairly reasonable.

I wish I could give you a real world performance answer but I just received a land plane this past fall but have not used it. As 2poor mentioned, a box blade can carry a significant amount of material to help fill large voids in the road/trail surface. I purchased a land plane to maintain an already established gravel driveway and I own a Kubota 2680 which is a smaller tractor so pulling a box blade may have been a struggle!

The box blade can be used to push as well pull material. Grading is about moving water. If you go with the box it helps if you “tail off” one side of the other when you are finishing a run.
