I see a lot of people looking for sleepy creek traps(my self included). Is the market completely dead or very small? I’m considering coming up with a patent and making my own with slight modifications from multiple out of business companies that people seemed to like along with modern parts. USA made and reasonably priced.. what are your thoughts.

I think it would be great if you can do it. I'd say the market is indeed small, but if you can fill a niche, who knows?

Neat venture, but I cannot fathom it would be a lucrative business move; with the lack of demand, and future fur price slump. Too much good used gear on the market as well.

Kevin O’Leary , of Shark Tank, would say. ‘ take that idea behind the barn and shoot it”. (. IF YOU’RE TRYING TO MAKE $$)

Lots of Victor traps out there still at reasonable prices I use the 3s on land and the 4s on beaver lots of the new or close to new strong. Change out the pans and you have a great custom trap for less. Lots of 100 year old traps still being used today.

I'd like to see someone copy the Victor #2 jump trap , that was an excellent waterline trap with that big pan.And the Victor #3 and #4 longspring, but on the longspring trapa change the hump and cross pan to a post pan with nut and bolt.

Good Luck to you only downside i see is you'd have to buy a large quantity of parts to be more economical and a gazillion of used #1's floating around But i'm just an old man who grumps at everything

Longsprings are still popular in Alaska especially the #0, #1, #3, and #4.

Lots and lots of used long spring traps available. Some are stock. Some have been modified. The Trap Shed on Tman is a place to buy and sell. Also, many trapping sites on FB.

Your idea looks good on paper. Hope you have a lot of money to “invest”. No matter how “good” you make your trap, some people won’t like it. That is why you see so many variations on modified traps. You can’t please all of the trappers all of the time.

One last comment - Made in USA and reasonably priced - can’t work in the same sentence. Fact of life.

I see victor 3ns around here go for around $20 then ur talking another $5-7 to install a pit pan and a rod dog. Would be nice to pick up somthing like that in that $20-25range and have a brand new trap with strong springs

Do you plan on having a trap with cast jaws?

You can get ordinary #3 Victors for $10.00 or so. Add your $5.00 to $7.00 mods. You’ve got a good functional trap for under. $20.00

You sticking strictly to long springs or considering others as well? Two that come to mind that had strong followings were BMI body grips and the Coon Dagger dog proofs.

For muskrat trappers and cat trappers how come ppl moved away from the jump trap? My great grandpa was a government trapper in idaho for over 30 years and passed down a couple hundred #14 jumps.. and 100s of jump stop loss.. he caught 1000s of animals in them and worked well

Most of my traps are 3 and 4 longspring love them I do modify the trigger system and love cast jaws. I still use a lot of Newhouse and 3ns.

Or, come up with a new design. I know, if it ain't broke don't fix it but nothing catches a trappers eye like something shiny and different. We're worse than the animals we try to catch.
