One of my trapping areas is pretty much cleaned out of coyotes. I really hammered them. I still have one or two that are running a gasline. I made three sets like this in the center of the gas line, about 100yds apart. No matter which way the wind blows or which way they come in it will get their attention. Never met a canaine that doesn't like a fresh deer leg.

That'll work.

But, I'd likely have a buzzard in those traps if I set that.

Yeah and a white headed buzzard wouldn’t go over well.We have exposed bait laws in Wisconsin.

Can't have exposed bait with 30 feet of our traps "cages" here in WA either and then still can't be visible to carrion eating birds

I've heard of similar sets done except they dig or drilled a hole straight down and shoved the staked off leg

Guaranteed buzzard or hawk catch for me. Heck I’ve used fresh beaver down a deep dirthole and the temps warmed and the meat spoiled and a buzzard 3 days after setting, lol.

I thought the deer leg set was to have just the hooves sticking above the deck?

With dwindling coyotes numbers, you will catch something which you would rather not before you catch a scarce coyote.
