Since I'm a poor boy and don't get to dabble in the stock market this is the only fun I get is guessing how to maximize my beaver money. LOL

I've been wrong lots of times, but every once in a while I'm right!

Sell into strength. Now (March) seems reasonable. Fingers crossed the momentum continue and spill onto other species.

Full disclosure the auction, although I’m a believer, has let me down before.

A very successful fur buyer I knew used to say don’t fall in love with your fur.

Dropped a few bags off at the FHA truck yesterday. Looked like a decent load compared to previous pick ups. Driver said he was on pace to fill the truck and likely need to off load before finishing the route.

I guess folks have a short memory. Yeah, go ahead, hang on to them, this beaver market is going to keep going up. Ask people who have freezers full of coyotes if it was a good idea to hang on to them.

I know a guy that turned down $100 to be offered $50 a year later. He still has them and they may bring $30 now. At least a 50% drop on beaver is on $15 a head. The time to speculate is not when fur is high. You do that when it is low.

Didn't NAFA have a program in 2014 to hold your coon for free till the market improved? Then they'll went belly up.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

“Greed, for lack of a better term”

Speculation is simply investing in goods with the hope of gains. With a risk of loss. On paper the broader fur market is highly oversold. $3 coon mink and rats. The risks seems limited to $3 +storage. Beaver however are currently the odd man out.

Is processing beaver as fast as you can to meet the pick-up schedule, but not getting them all done, considered holding?

I was just told by my local agent that FHA pickup has been delayed a week in my region due to weather. My guess is that they are not receiving the fur that they anticipated. I was literally loading the truck and then unloaded. In another week I can add around 20 more beaver that are on the boards. My guess is this auction is going to be the peak of the beaver market.

Canada Goose got Peta'd and suddenly there was no need for coyote fur. Look up what trajectory the felt hat market is on right now. It's the high quality beaver felt hats pushing that market, the cheaper wool and rabbit fur stuff hat are doing well too but I don't think will knock out the use of beaver for the premier hat makers.

I'm not going to speculate with numbers but think we could see a significant uptick in the average over last year.

FHA still has over a 1000 lbs of unsold #2 but that they are slowly moving it out. The western select #1 is sold out and they have a regular customer that buys all that they can get. If I understand correctly, all the #1 from last year was sold.

BTW, I asked what the western select will be valued at and was told roughly $100 US/lb.

Take the $100/lb. for western select subtract 25% for shrinkage and 11% commission and you are down to $64/lb.
