I've wanted to do this since I moved into this house over a decade ago. I just keep putting it off for larger projects. I've finally had it and I can't take it anymore. The tool room in my shop is always a mess. No bench space, can't work on anything, tripping over stuff. The standing "work bench" was made by one of the Amish that lived here in times past. It was a chunk of 1/2" OSB propped up by some 2x4's. Pretty much useless and nothing you can really beat on. It's time to rip it all out and put in a real bench with cabinets, drawers, and a steel plate top. As usual, I'm doing my best to over-engineer it. When I'm done, You'll be able to park a tank on it. Here's what I started with. Do you blame me? Now I'm committed! I'm doing everything with lap joints. It's going to be very rigid and be able to take quite the beating. Here's the start of this project. I'll be posting as the project continues, providing there is interest.

Looking good so far. Sometimes, the best thing that you can do, is gut it out! Then make it yours! I am at the same point at my place! Good luck, and keep updating.

Wow! If my shop looked as neat as your before picture I'd be tickled.

A thought Finster. A workout joint went out of business here and for next to nothing I bought the 1/2” thick rubber interlocking matts that were the floor. They interlock to make a solid non slip floor, wonderful to stand on, impervious to anything I’ve dropped on them solid or liquid. They are dense enough that I can pull a car or truck in the shop with no sign it had ever been there and a creeper rolls on it just fine. Drop a scope or whatever no damage. Here in Minnesota it sure cut the heat bill down as well.
Also on my bench’s I have a 4” face running horizontally along and under the front outer counter tops, the electrical outlets in that face, recessed, horizontally as well. cabinet doors below. I really like not having any cords on the bench, I’d rather they hang.
