Some people have suggested we do away with the electoral college. Beware of what you wish for. Hillary would have been the 2016 president, not The Donald, as she got more of the popular vote.

Same for Al Gore, I think.

The electoral college keeps the little states in the game. Without it, small states would have less political value to candidates. Forget Iowa, NH, and SC. They would have no importance.

One of the first things you've said that I can agree with. Rural has NO voice without it.

Same could be said of the 17th. Prior to that Senators were directly elected by state legislatures. The 17th nationalized (party politics) the senate.

Without the Electoral College two or three big cities will dominate the entire national election every four years, assuming that there is no vote fraud. The people pushing to eliminate the Electoral College want majority rule, urban rule, and for the undeveloped rural areas to have no real voice in the national election. It is a brilliant concept that maximizes citizen representation, and thus it is a target of the political left. Just like the political left targets trapping, guns, natural food (see the stories about Amish farmer Amos Miller in Lancaster County), paper money, privacy etc.

That’s the difference between a representative republic and a democracy our forefathers were brilliant beyond compare

I've never seen anyone other than a liberal talk about doing away with the electoral college before.

Liberals will be trying for eliminating the electoral college! They have begun the process, by allowing millions to pour through the Southern boarder. Having these people in line, and ready to vote for the giver of the cheese.
If they can get away with it, there may be no return!

If you away the electoral college, the votes in 84% of the counties in the United States will not count. The country would definitely be a dictatorship run by 16% of the urban counties. This is exactly the reason the Liberals want the College eliminated to rule us forever.

Doing away with electoral college will be equivalent to 5 wolves and 2 sheep voting about what's for dinner

But counties don't vote; people do.

When the Constitution was drafted and ratified, it took weeks to carry news, including election results, from one end of the country to the other. It made sense for the states to send representatives to an electoral college to finalize the voting.

Nowadays information can be transmitted almost instantaneously all around the world. If the Constitution was drafted today, there probably would be little justification for an electoral college.

I could be wrong, and am open to be persuaded otherwise, but I believe the electoral college wasn't intended as a means of adjusting relative political power between urban and rural areas. The Constitution provides such balancing by establishing two senators for each state, regardless of population.

Is the electoral college still justified? I don't know, but it's part of the Constitution and is unlikely to be amended, so it is what it is.

That's the amendment that needs repealed. As for the electoral college, it sure helps in the elimination of the tyranny of the majority.

Wrong imo....

Those representatives could've just as easy carried the vote totals with them instead of them representing a group of people, if that was the reason the Electoral college was created.

I believe you are correct in why the electoral college exists.

Who were the founding fathers? Many were rural landowners, farmers, stock growers themselves. As brilliant as they were in setting up our country and electoral processes do you think they could not see that the densely populated areas would overwhelm so to speak the vitally needed and equally important sustenance providers?
An equal voice was the concept of nearly everything the founders created. The electoral college is a brilliant solution to a problem and should be instituted at state levels.
