I bought some older chisels off of ebay a few months ago. A Shapleigh, Keen Kutter, and Oakleaf. They were pretty rough, and naturally someone decided a grinder was a smart move. There was also quite a bit of rust. I wet sanded them down and buffed them out, honed them to a razor edge and, I even re-leathered, sanded and waxed the handles. I should have taken some before pictures. However, they did turn out nice. A fine addition to my shop.

Those look real nice. Good job on them. I know the Shapleigh's are good chisels.

I vividly remember try to reshape one with a messed up edge with a file. I had it in a vise pointed right at me when the file slipped and I cut the side of my thumb from the tip to just beyond the joint. Basically fileted my thumb.

I started with sandpaper but have since switched to diamond plates finished with a strop and buffing compound. Honing is quick and easy but flattening the back can be time consuming. Thankfully you only have to do that once.

They don't make em like that anymore . Well maybe they do But you certainly have some good examples of what they looked like from new I am always pleased when I can take some thing that looks a little rough ad not taken care of and making it look it has regained it's rightful place of value and honor Nice job on the refurbish and a good post.

I have a bid in for a bunch more of various brands. They are pretty rough, but it's a nice quick project to restore one when I have the time.
