Any of ya'll have any experience with a deaf dog? I have a GP female that was born deaf, didn't notice it till about a month after we got her. The breeder said they never had one before and offered to replace her but we didn't. Any way is deafness heredity? Was thinking of breeding her but don't want a whole litter that can't hear.

Back when I was a kid we had a white Lab. Poncho didn't need to hear voice commands, we taught him hand signals even tho he wasn't deaf. Didn't want to be yelling to him a hundred feet away and scare off the game.

My 10 year old GP has gone completely deaf. I thought maybe he could still hear the toner on his collar since it was right under his ears but he can't. He knows hand signals pretty well but they don't do any good if you can't get his attention first, and hand signals aren't much good when hunting heavy cover anyway when you can't see each other.
I'd talk to your vet about the heredity question. I wouldn't think it would be hereditary, but I could be wrong.

Yes, congenital deafness is hereditary particularly with white or merle coated and glass eyed breeds. The gene is linked to glass eyes and is known to occur in Catahoula, Dalmatian and Chihuahua. Even if not deaf a dog can be a carrier of the gene as it is recessive requiring two copies, one from each parent, to be effected.

JMO, but I would not breed an effected animal, it's parents or littermates and I'd be studying the pedigrees to try to identify the carriers to be avoided, culled or fixed if possible.

Work with the dog if you’re going to keep it they have a way of adapting. Landowner that we hunted with years ago had one if he never said something we would never known.

It depends on your commitment the dog is what it is.

We had a Catahoula out of a litter growing up that was deaf

Combination of blue (glass) eyes and a lot of white on the head seemed to be a strong indicator that the puppy would be deaf. Not every litter would have one with that gene combination so genetic yes, but not sure like every offspring was going to be deaf.

Our 17yo Chihuahua is 90% blind (cataracts) and pretty much deaf but she still manages

I had a wire hair terrier i bought at 8 weeks old, he was deaf. I got him for a trap line dog. I thought I could make it work with hand signals. Didn't work out. I didn't figure out he was deaf for a couple months after I got him

Deafness onset as an adult can be anything injury, disease, hereditary or just old age.

We had a deaf Cocker on the plantation. He was an OLD dog that back in the day was a stud retriever. I didn’t know he was deaf.
This dog loved to swim. He would hit the pond and swim anywhere from 10-45min. Literally just swim, no hitting the bank, just swim laps or circles in the pond.
The manager and family went out of town and I had kennel duty. I let the pointers out in their run and let the cockers run free. Well, kennels were clean and it was time to get them all put up. Got the pointers and all the cockers back in their kennels except for Smokey. I screamed at that dog until I almost lost my voice, but he wouldn’t come to me. He wouldn’t even look my way. If he wasn’t the “pride” of the kennels he would’ve been shot! I was ticked.
Now this happened the entire time they were gone. After day 2 he only ran in the run.
When they got back I told them I was about ready to put a bullet in that joker and he’d never be let out of his kennel if I ever had kennel duty again.
They then explained he was deaf!!! I mean not a sound heard deaf but knows hand commands. Screaming at him does absolutely no good and none of my jumping up and down and giving him the finger was any of the commands he knew, lol.
He died last year and the main pond on the plantation is now named “Smokey’s Pond” with a sign and everything.

I've owned plenty of hounds that at times you would have sworn they were deaf.
