Last time I trapped beaver seriously I used chain drowners and a Blakeley lock. I realized this season why I hate cable drowners so want to make up some more chains. What’s your favorite chain drowner lock out there and what are the pros/cons of it?

Bauer-type works well with chain...even double loop twist link chain. I made several using 1" square tubing and a short piece of 3/4" flat metal welded on (bend down slightly after welding on and drill hole near end to attach 3/16" quick link for trap chain attachment. Cut a shallow v-notch in top of tubing...guarantees snag with no return back up the chain...even on welded link chain.

Shouldn’t take a guy long to hate cable. One catch should be enough !

Bauer locks here. I got them from MTP and use them exclusively.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Also, Will a 1/8” and 3/16” quick link work with the HAGz?

2.5" Conduit cut at an angle on one side/ hole on slanted side for trap chain- conduit slides over chain well

I’ve had trouble with them coming back up using #2 machine chain. Homemade 1” square tubing lock. Sometimes they stay on the business end, but not always. What’s the best chain to use? Or do I need different locks?

I have zero experience with chain drowners as I use 1/2" rebar. But I do not see any reason that the lock I use would not lock up on chain also. Depending on the size chain, the lock might have to be a little larger diameter. But the 45 degree angle on one end and the V notch on the other end should lock up just fine.

I use the ring/washer style. Works on chain and rod, slides very freely. They do require either the long-link style #2 chain or #3 chain. If the links are too short it can come back up. That’s the only disadvantage.
Advantages are: VERY free slide, works with chain and rod, cheap to make/buy. I have no doubt all these slide locks shown on the other posts will work fine also. Definitely test whatever setup you go with by setting one up in the yard just like you will be using them, and trying to pull it back up and make sure it slides down easy. That’s how I learned they didn’t work with regular number 2 chain, slid down fine but I could pull them back up. They lock up great and slide very easy on rods.
