Poly for long johns, It it gets lower than 40 below I will switch to Duo-Fold longies. Cotton layer next to my skin with a wool layer bonded to that. For the upper half I wear a cotton Tee shirt, with a flannel shirt and over that a wool shirt .....maybe . Gotta be at least 20 below before I add the wool shirt

[quote=Nessmuck]Cotton is rotten

For your socks and tee shirt in cold weather

Cotton a absorbes moisture when you sweat....and stays damp.

You need a wick dry garment next to your skin...to stay dry ..in the cold[/quote
Don't do a lot of sweating if you dress right for the weather. Have work a farm outside in winter most of my life and if you dress right with layers you can take some off and never sweat. Never worked an inside job. Feet sweating? Never had that problem so I don't know. I wear cotton socks and Mickey mouse boots most of the time in winter.

Wool was used for thousands of years prior to cotton

To keep warm, polyester or polypropylene. I like the military's ECWCS stuff. Gen III, Levels 1 & 2 are my go-to for outside winter work or hunting. I have some older Gen 2 polypropylene that is really heavy, I don't wear that unless I'll be inactive in sub-freezing weather for extended periods.

To stay cool in warm weather lightweight cotton, long-sleeve, button-down shirts.

Merino wool socks year round, heavier in the winter.

Eh...wot?

You must have Inuit blood!

Do they still make Duo-Fold long underwear? They used to be my go-to a long time ago. I believe the made a one-piece union suit also.

Liked them so much I earned the moniker Uncle Ubb from my kids (from the Dr. Seuss book Uncle Ubb And His Underwear Too) for wearing them around the house in the evenings.

ABSOLUTELY DOES!!!!!! It will absorb water, then freezes next to your skin as soon as you quit exerting yourself, sucking the heat right out of you. PolyPro or Wool next to the skin.
Many years ago, be\fore the advent of polypro, Joe Namath got famous wearing pantyhose on the field, so I tried it. Works great! Except it's a real hassle to take a whiz, and if they get a runner in just the right (wrong) place, it will try to strangle or chop off Mr. Winkie! So I went with tight's, not as cheap, but so much better. And let the joshing begin.

Merino wool next to skin weight based on temperature and activity level. If it’s really cold and I’m sitting all day heavyweight merino. As a next layer I’m really impressed with some of the new down offerings super light weight. The warm to weight ratio is phenomenal. It can be wadded up in your coat pocket and put on once you reach stand

If I could afford it a top and bottom made from Alpca. Been using Apaca socks this winter. Feet have not been cold once. Very soft next to the skin.

Polypropylene socks and polypropylene long johns. They need to fit snug. Cotton socks over the poly socks. When I take my boots off, I can ring water out of the cotton socks, take off the poly socks and my feet will be bone dry. Amazing stuff.
I can't wear wool. It's like wearing a porcupine hide quill side in.
