I acquired 3 buffalo hides, I am working on fleshing now. as far as tanning I just don't know. I was unable to get the brains to brain tan, so will NuTan work? some other way?

You could always buy some hog brains. I've used them on deer skins.

I had good results using eggs on deerskins. Big whitetail hides I used 2 dozen eggs.

I know there's a book out about brain tanning buffalo, can't remember the author's name off the top of my head.

I buy Buffalo skin gloves I was surprised they are no thicker than other hides from the looks of it. Not sure if that helps just what I noticed.

I'd check with a beef slaughterhouse and get a couple cow skulls .
Then get some good boards to make a frame for stretching it out , then a darn good fleshing knife that's as far as my knowledge goes .

I used Knobloch's on one. Didn't turn out as soft as I'd hoped, but I'm 99% sure that was operator error not the formula.

Good experience to appreciate tanning with brains, you'll look like "Popeye" when you're done getting them soft.

First thing to do when brain tanning large hides like moose is to thin down the leather to 1/16 inch thick all over by dryscraping or frostscraping. Then tan and it will be easy to soften.
Lace the hide on a frame after fleshing then you can dryscrape or frostscrape whenever you have spare time until you get it complete. That way it is much less tedious, also more than one person can work on it together or at different times.

When dryscraping be careful not to pop a hole by overscraping. If you pop a hole wet it and sew it then let it dry.If you dont the rip can run when working the skin nearby the hole.

Get a few good frostscrapers or dryscrapers that you can sharpen with a file.

A fellow I knew a lotta years ago asked me if I wanted gloves from a moose he shot and was having things made from the hide. They were fantastic supple gloves. He told me wherever he had them made they shaved the hide down thickness wise and thus they were great.
I do not know how that was accomplished, but I would think the same must be done to a Buffalo hide for some garment items you may be trying to make or have made?

I do not have a bunch of experience with tanning. I just tanned a weasel and a few muskrats. I went to Pro1 Performance chemicals and bought all the tanning items I needed. They have a VERY good instructional guide that tells you about the entire process from salting to tanning. Like I said I am by no means a professional at it. I'm still practicing. I do not have a fleshing machine either. Having a machine would make it a lot easier I feel to thin the hides. I will attach the link to pro1 performance chemicals below. I hope this helps you out. Let me know how it turns out in the end!! Post some pictures of the process. I will be doing a youtube video soon on the way I have been tanning my hides. My channel is MN_wildernessoutpost Good luck and have fun doing it!!

So. I use to tan 25-30 buffalo hides a year using hog brains and a tanning oil sold by a taxidermy supply house. I had a machine to flesh with that was kind of like pulling the hide around a radial arm saw mash brains into hide after fleshing roll up flesh to flesh side tricky on how long to leave that way depending on temp and humidity take hide out lace on frame and break scrape with modified hoe type tool as stated elsewhere your arms will be like pop eyes after all this --- mine are lol. The way the commercial guys get them super pliable is by shaving the hide thickness down. A Buffalo bull hide on the head is easily an inch thick and they get thinner hide going back to hindquarters but are still thicker than a deer even at the tail My clients harvested a hundred buffalo a year and we skinned them all on the ground I did this for ten years and have skinned many hundreds of buffalo. Sorry to get long winded. Yes you can tan them that way but it is a lot of work

I've always wanted to tan Buffalo. I've tanned (traditional ways passed down to me) lots of deer elk and other animals
