I am sure some of you have experienced catching coon that didn't have any long guard hair. Although I remember seeing one a number of years ago that was really dark, the one I caught yesterday was normal except there was not one long guard hair. The coat was very heavy and not lacking in any other way that I could see. I have seen 1000s of coon in my life, so don't think I am a novice at it and the best catch season, some years ago, was 363 coon. This coon was fairly large for coon in our neck of the woods at 21 lbs, 2 oz. I also caught another coon yesterday that was 16 lbs. 5 oz. This coon was normal with long guard hair. Photo of abnormal in our area. Garry-

Well, not a fast food restaurant, but the golf course has a full restaurant and it has been raiding the dumpster.
Is that why it has no long guard hair? I am asking because I haven't experienced this before. The other coon I got yesterday, was caught out away from the restaurant and it was normal. The dumpster-diving coon was extremely fat. I guess that is what a good life will do to you.

I caught one like that years ago, big sow hair was like steel wool, and leather was BLACK in December.
Well I know there are "Sampson" foxes, and even caught one once (wish I had tanned it) so why no "Sampson" coons?

I have seen that a couple times and it was always in coon that were real fat. Maybe they don't prime up as fast due to fat insulation? I am guessing it is bluer leathered than the 16 lb one. I would like you thoughts on the leather color after you have skinned them. I have seen coyotes with that short even nap too. Here is a shorter nap coon. I took the picture due to his size.

Good night MJM that was a road.
I read a news article from back home last week. It was about Bud Sankey being inducted into the Kansas Rodeo Hall of Fame. Do I remember you saying you'd fought bulls for him at Rose Hill back in the day?

Do I remember you saying you'd fought bulls for him at Rose Hill back in the day? I went to Bobby MacAffee's bull fighting school at Sankey's in Rose Hill. I went to Larry Clayman's and Jon Tayler's at Gays in Mesquite Tx too. That was when it was a outdoor arena yet.

Although the coon has been skinned for several days... it has been in the freezer. I think they flesh a little easier after they have been frozen. So, I just finished fleshing the both of the coon in question above. They were both white and not blue. BUT... The big coon looks like SHE has been breeding. From her neck down between her shoulders, the blood vessels seem to be broken and there were two distinct sets of teeth marks. One set on her neck right below the skull and another one about halfway between the skull and the shoulders. That would be indicative of a male grabbing hold with his teeth. Nether set of teeth marks broke through the skin into the flesh. Garry-

The females prime late because they are stressed from raising kits. Coon get in fights all the time that can result in bite marks. They don’t breed until late winter in cold climates.
Those are what I call kinky coon.
