Got grandkids coming up and am interested in getting back into muzzleloader hunting after 12 year loll . What powder and bullets are hunters using with good results. I'm using .50 cal. flintlock.

if your running a flinter in PA late season you only really have patched round ball and PA-conical

as I understand it

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Goex or Swiss powder only....Get FFF if you can ....FF will work too.

.495 round ball ..with .015 lubed patch

FFFF in the pan ....FFF will work better for damp conditions

90 grain FF ....or ..80 grains FFF

I use a flintlock also. Mine is a .54, and I use a patched round ball with 80 grains of Swiss 3F in the pan and the barrel. It's worked great for several years.

Why do I carry 10mm? Because shooting twice is just silly.

It all depends on your rifle. Twist, depth of rifling, length of barrel, etc.

My 54 is 1:70 twist, 42 inches long and really likes 85 grains of goex 3f with a 530 ball and an .018 patch lubed with rendered coon fat.

3f is fine fine for priming, it's all I have used for 15 years. Load and prime from the same horn.

My flintlock is ready to go! I love the extra benefits it affords me. Hope I can get a deer cause archery was unsuccessful.

A .018 lubed ticking patch and a .490 ball over 75 gr of Goex 3F is what I use in my Mike Miller .50 cal. 3F in the pan too. Took a buck at 90 yds last season. I hunt with a crossbow, modern rifle, and flintlock ML and the flinter is the most fun to hunt with.

I guess I'm in the minority, those sound like hot loads. I only use 70 grains in my 50 cal.

In my 50, I use 65 grains 3f. It has a swamped, 42 inch barrel with round bottom 1:66 twist. It's all about what the barrel likes.

In my 54, 80 grains shoots a 3 inch group at 50 yards. 85 grains takes that to 5 shots all touching and a 2.5 inch group at 100.

I'm right there with you. After much testing that is the amount of FFFg my .50 flinter likes accuracy-wise.

That load has enough power to send a patched round ball right through a broadside deer, it's happened several times.

Eh...wot?
