Interesting to hear on a u tube video a well known fur buyer say castor doesn’t store well in a freezer. I’ve stored a year or two before and have a decent amount in my freezer now and really hadn’t thought it was an issue. He remarked you lose weight and quality and basically don’t store. Thoughts on this?

It will shrink/dehydrate over the course of a few years. It is best to unload it if you can, before too long, as what was stated is accurate.

It develops frost when frozen which crystalizes on and in the castor. Then as it thaws to room temperature, it will dry lighter in weight then prior to freezing due to the extra frost evaporation.

Castor keeps well in the freezer if you dont dry it too much before freezing.
I dry my castor for 2 or 3 days then into the freezer in heavy plastic bag with the air removed (same as fresh pelts)
Before I sell I take it out of the freezer and finish drying it for 2-3 more days.
That said, the longest I have kept frozen castor is about 3 years. They weighed and sold the same as the ones from the current year.Cant say how they would do after 5-10 years.

I know a local buyer who will have 3-400 pounds in the freezer at times. That is how he stores it and he may hang onto it for three or four years until he gets the right price for it. Now that doesn't mean it is the best way, he is a know-it-all who can't be told anything because he already knows it (and a friend of mine, who I'll tell that to his face ;))but he has been in business quite a long time and hasn't went broke yet.

He may not be broke yet smile but he certainly is losing weight particularly on that volume with years in a freezer.

hmm ive still got a bunch of what I call "castor pockets" in my freezer. There just the fat, castors, etc from nuisance beaver and it was too warm to properly clean them.

The rough cut "pockets" still encased in fat and tissue will certainly weather the storm so to speak better than cleaned castor.

Depends on the break point, not much risk on freezing 20 dollar a pound castor.
