Getting myself some more dog proof traps (going with No B.S.) and it got me thinking about chain setups. The No B.S. comes with the wolf fang but I'll probably keep a quick link on it to wrap around a tree with the chain so I don't need to deal with digging up the anchor.

I have Dukes that I run with fixed 7x7 cable for looping around drags/trees and it's fast but they can get pretty beat up after a couple catches. I was thinking of just using chain. Does anyone else do this? Do you add more swivels? I realize it can be heavy but I'm trapping mostly from the truck and not setting a ton at a time.

Alternatively, what is your favorite DP chain/anchor setup and why?

I’ve got the same cable on 7yr old Duke DP’s and haven’t had an issue yet. All I do is put a loop big enough on one end to pass the trap through and it’s set. If the tree has a small diameter I’ll wrap it a few times before passing it through the loop. If I’m in a muddy or real soft dirt area I can pull anchors up by hand I’ll use an anchor. Coons don’t jump and pull an anchor up, the go side to side. After a catch I’ll pull it up and move it up or down the trail a little and push it back in the deck.
Y’all have to have different coons than we have to need chain or them to tear up cable.

If you use a JC Conner Chesnut Ring on the end you can loop the chain through it and then the trap through the loop you just made. It can also be used for staking.

I just run a 32" T-Stake right thru the swivel at the end of the trap's chain. Never had a coon pump it more than an inch or two.

Thank you for the input! And yes, the coons up here can be feisty!

That is an outstanding recommendation! I love the versatility. How do you like to attach it to the chain?

I never thought of that. I’m always too wigged out that they’ll run off with my trap. I have 24” rebar T-stakes but our soil is super rocky.

I just use 3/32 cable with a standard Berkshire. Fast and easy.

I have not caught many but I use a length of 3/32 cable with loops at each end if I don't want to use a berkshire earth anchor and a quick link.
