Hello all, my brother shot a buck that wasn’t using on of its front legs. Turns out his hoof is almost the side of a baseball and looks to be infected. Is that something he should be concerned about eating the rest of the deer because of?

I ate a buck I killed, that had an infected right front ankle from a broad head. I just didn't eat the meat from that leg. The meat was good.

What does the liver look like? If it looks reasonably normal, eat it.

I left one in the woods that had been shot low below the guts and under the skin. There was a base ball size knot and when pushed on the thickest puss you ever saw shot out in a stream the size of a nickel.

I thought I would cut around it and did throwing the puss filled piece of skin to the side. The normally yellow fat streaks on the membrane around the guts were brown in that area and yellow to the sides. But when I got down to make my entry guting cut the smell of infection hit me so hard I retched . Then I decided the infection was most likely through its body and may not be a good idea to eat. I'm not one for taking chances with my family's
Well being, it's not like my family was hungry or I could not shoot another healthy deer. Coyotes need to eat to.

It was the first week of Dec and that bucks antler cam off when he hit the ground and the other when i rolled it over to gut. I guessed it was becuse he was week and sick because they Carry them sometimes tell March here.

I would think if the blood were flowing through the infected area that the whole deer would be bad ???

You do understand infections when they become septic and other various blood infections will spread throughout the body and attach itself in the blood vessels when it’s in a later state. Any blood infection spreads to every bit of meat. I would ask the DNR or whatever state agency you have to issue you another tag

Dave eats good, don't let anyone tell you differently !
I've spent time with Dave ( Vinke) both at his home in Washington State and in the Arizona desert.
He fed me like a King.
He and his wife are both excellent cooks and fine people.
No# 1 in my book

Eating a deer with an infected foot

I remember on year I had an infected foot right before vacation. Got some antibiotics for it, went on vacation and eat all kinds of stuff!

I can tell you what a processor does when he encounters anything like that while skinning…drops that joker and hauls it to the trash bin then bleaches everything including all cutlery.
