I like 150s for deer. You can shoot from 110gr to 220gr in .30cal. 150 to 180 is the most comon sold ammo in 308.

range with good terminal effect , anything you can reasonably range and hit inside 400 probably further just wind gets to be an issue , so you need to read the wind which can be harder and takes more time shooting in the wind to learn where to hold.
I would keep shots on game under 300 but as long as you know the range of your animal , where your load hits and aren't in crazy wind 308 is still trucking along faster at 300 yards than many 30-30 rounds leave the muzzle .
we clocked some 150gr 30-30 yesterday 2095 avg for factory loads
at 300 a 180gr 308 that started at 2620 should be 2100 fps

at 300 yards 180gr 308 will absolutely crater mild steel 1/4 inch plate almost through at 200 it will go through

this is where providence and I differ I like the hand loaded 180s in my 308 but 150 s would work fine on deer at most deer hunting distances

a 150 from a 308 is 70fps less than it is from the 30-06 in Remington by their boxes Winchester puts them 100fps apart

it is really more about finding what your gun likes to shoot and your drops at whatever distance you would like to be shooting.
all of our 308s have a 1:10 twist that seem to prefer heavy or slower there is a reason 1:12 was the norm for 308 for a long time in 308 as 150gr bullets were the norm for 308
the Army M24 sniper system uses 1:11.25 as the gun is optimized for 175gr bullets

1:12 isn't quite Ideal for 180s and 1:10 might spin 150s a little hard as I don't get the best groups from some 150gr factory ammo it is also factory ammo
my 180 hand loads perform for me and I make them fairly cheap and in quantity with speer bullets

both are easily minute of deer heart at 100 yards so either would work.

depending on the brands it is 100-120fps difference so nothing huge , we might just be splitting hairs with the actual difference, go with what ever shoots better in your gun.

the light 110, 120 , 125, 130 ammo for 308 tends to be varmint bullets intended for rapid expansion which may mean no exit hole.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When hunting deer down in the lesser 48 the caliber of choice is .243. When hunting in deer in SEAK the lightest caliber I will pack is 300 WinMag.

The most popular? Probably the 30-30 followed closely by the 30-06, for North America.

I carried a .300 Win Mag for Kodiak blacktails. 180 grain bullets drop anything on this continent.

I don't know about Eastern US deer hunting, but I can't believe a 30-30 is at all common out west. I started out with one near 60 years ago but even then, they were primarily passed down guns to kids starting out. I haven't seen one in anyone's hands while hunting in years.

Well yeah, kind of a consideration. Deer season can be bear season real quick.

Thankfully enough Youth model guns were available as options. I always felt the tube fed lever guns were a poor option. I have heard countless stories of accidental discharging clearing the gun.

Detachable magazines and a model that can have safety engaged while clearing chamber is a far better option.

Detachable mags draw backs show up when the youngster hits the release or does not get the mag seated and it gets lost. It can run a hunt if you only loaded one mag and went hunting and a round has not been chambered yet. It really stings when it's a $50 mag that gets lost. Not that that's ever happend to me or anything.

There is one more confirmation of popular deer rifle calibers. Just look at what calibers factory hunting rifles are offered in. For 90% plus, they will include:

300 Win
30-06
308 Win
270 Win
243 Win

Plus a few random others like 26-06, 7mm Rem, 7mm-08, 6.5 CM, etc. Same with ammo on the shelf.

I know 30-30 is a popular deer gun in some regions. I've never seen one.

Edited: I have seen one of the 6 BAR's. Neighbor had one in 308. Whoever wound up with it got a 30 year old gun fired less than 20 times.

Yes I've had a few tracking episodes due to pee poor bullet performance. Because of that I will not shoot anything Hornady.

well that is just it if that is the first thing you own and your lean on money with a gaggle of kids your never going to justify another rifle.
well maybe if you can buy something more fur friendly with your fur check.

I was there for some years , then I um yeah 308 is hardly a branch out from 30-06 it is just M2 ball in a shorter case with less wasted space
because 70 fps with the same bullet is really just like whatever your shooting is 25 yards further away sun unless your pushing some serious range the animal on the other end will never know the difference.

decades of cheap but solid surplus rifles and ammo cemented the 30-06 in US use much like the 303brit in Canada

Yep 30-06 is pretty vanilla but it does do a job rather handily and I can't tell the difference at the end of the day if it was shot by my 243, 257 wby, 26 nosler, 30-06, 300 wm or 338 wm. To be truthful I mostly hunt with my 26 , 257 or 338.

I have just the opposite over 100 deer shot with Hornady bullets and or ammo and alway preformed perfect
Seira game kings on the other hand in .30 150gr. After that I quit buying green boxes of bullets. Still have a bunch of 5.56 loaded with 55gr blitz kings like full ammo boxes. Accurate enough of a load to hit dimes with. But I switched to a cheaper soft point to shoot when I put the 4x acog on. With the lowered powered scope I couldn't shoot as good so no since wasting ammo in a platform combe that was not capable and I cand shoot bullets that do the job at a fraction of the price.

I had issues with some of their SST ammo in 12 & 20 ga. and leverevolution ammo in .44 mag. (accurate, but no expansion on deer) No troubles with any of the others of theirs I have tried. I really like their .223 55gr HP ammo.

I never shot anything with their sst just interlocks, and xtps. But they have alway worked. O and the 110 v max in an 8.5" 300 black out have preformed well for us

Hornady sst's and 165 btsp's have given nothing but grief. Not so much on deer and moose but elk.

No sst's for me then. Been planning on moving to barns once we shoot up what we have. Often we shoot shoulder or neck shots and I'm getting tired of lead fragments . Figured all copper would eliminate that. But the only thing I'm close to out on is 243. Only 18 of those left and it probably won't get shot at all this year since tha boys already shot 9 and boath have their own new 350 legands and want to shoot them even though the 243 or 7mm-08 is a better round to use when we are on privet land.

Yep I switched to barnes and never looked back. Expensive but it does has anchored anything and everything I've shot with them.

Used to be 30-30 and 30-06 everywhere. I’d say people around our camp in the upper peninsula have mostly purchased different cartridges in the last decade. Lots of 6.5 cm, some 6.5 Grendel, some 25-06 and 243. One guy using a 6mm cm this season. Fewer semi autos and more bolt and single shots. Everyone is getting older and collecting more guns I guess.
