So trap line dog guys how do you keep your dog from getting in your perfectly made set aonce it's complete, and avoid vet bills when they get to a catch?

Few others from this morning. As far as the sets and getting to the catch I can't answer that one, first year with a dog on the line for me. She's learning basic commands but as you can see I still have her on a leash.

My guy has stepped in a trap once and now understands what his job is. 9 months old and stepped in a BRAND NEW MB650 and no damage. I let him out and he jumped into the truck and stayed there three rest if the day. That was 3 years ago. Now once I grab my trapping bucket, he sits down about 20 feet away and keeps guard. When checking, all I have to say is "trap" and he freezes.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

The injury I referred to was bites and such from animals in the traps not from the traps. I think I have been caught in everything from a Duke 1.5 to Bridger #5 & a 220.

As far as geting caught only once. Hmm my neibors dog has been caught in am mb550 and Bridger #2 dogless in the same year using the same bait and lure. Must just be a dumb dog.

Well I took her out again last night, running a very small line after work. It was a learning experience for the both of us! Had a coon in a dp, she was very excited and interested in it. When trying to get coon out of trap, using catch pole it got loose. Then the game was on! She went after coon and both bolted! It's on me this happened trying to do to many things at one time. I hollered for her to come back and to my surprise she instantly came right back. We loaded up and she got her treat and off to check empty traps!

I had two trap line dogs over the years. All got caught every now and then. I can still remember one situation where I had a double on reds, very close together. This dog was an Ausie mix breed.

I took out the one red and re made the set. I went over to attend to the next red. I took it out of the set and got down to start the remake. I looked over and could see Callie sniffing around the freshly made and lured set. Knowing reds, the whole circle burn smelled pretty good.

Well, she found everything too overwhelming to resist. The next thing I heard this is yipping and carrying on. smile I didn't have to think about what just happened; I knew. She wasn't caught for more than a minute by the time I walked over to the other set about 15 feet or so. Drama you know. We had a little talk about what just happened.

She was caught a few times over the years in that same scenario. I figured if she doesn't realize what can happen, snooping around, she needs to learn the hard way. Usually after getting caught like that, she wants to sit in the truck the rest of the day. smile She got better, to where she just sat down near to where I was making the sets. No more snooping around after a while.
