We had those same kind of desks when I was in grade school in the early 1950's. We had shoes though!

That was the year before I started public school. Our desks were wood , various sizes to accommodate the size of child . I think my boots were rubber. old 243

Exact same desks we had in grade school.They had a small hole in the top corner to hold the ink well.

Been there done that. The teacher put green sweeping compound on the wood floors to keep the dust down.

I've got a picture of my dad from that era in front of the school house with some other kids. Girls in dresses, boys in bib overalls. All of them barefoot.

When I was a kid I'd hunt rabbits behind the old school house my dad went to in KS.
The desk were very much like those. There was still a bell and bell tower and an old piano.
The school house was never locked that I can remember.

They had shoe rationing during WW2 it could have been still on in 46. It was 2 pair a year and kids could outgrow a pair in a short order.
