Was out the other day and speared this dandy with my late grandpa's spear! It is my personal best at 45 1/4 inches and 24lbs.


My dad speared one that was 44 inches when I was the same age as my boy. The words on the shirt seem fitting.

That is a dandy! My Grandmother loved Northerns so I used to spear quite a bit. I had to drive right by her house on my way home so I would drop her off fish and she always had homemade wild rice bread or something else fresh out of the oven to trade. I used to love spearing. After she died, I rebuilt the spear house (that Les Kouba used in his dark house paintings) and it hasn't been on the ice since.

Nice fish. I love to sit here in the spear house in the winter. I still have me grandfathers hand forged 5 time spear.

Nice Pike. I love spearing and have done a fair amount. I was thinking I need to make some more decoys a couple days ago. I only have about a half a five gallon bucket of them. Half the fun is watching your decoy swim to me. Take that boy along so he is hooked on it too.

Grandma always told me not to spear them in the middle and ruin the fillet. I have been known to get a little too far North from time to time. It took a mallet and a block of wood to get this one off the spear.

That's a biggun 160. That is nearly exactly where I nailed this one. When I spear a small one the spear goes through and through, but not on this one. It stopped dead about 80% through. I love it when that happens!

My boy went with me once so far and had a blast! Just kept talking about what we were doing and the big fish we got (only one about 3lbs that day). He is only two so don't take him out unless conditions are ideal.

MJM- I have 6 or 7 decoys mostly gifts from my dad, but I have my two favorite I always seem to use.

jk- This may end up being my lifetime record. My second biggest was 42" and 18 1/2 lbs.

That surely is one to brag about. That young man looks up to his dad that is obvious.
