These things happen in a free country. It's the price of freedom people always talk about. Free to protect yourself free to enter gun free zones unarmed. It's a tragic event that will repeat, and nothing can be done except personal vigilance.

The crux of the issue is do we lock up, deprive them of all rights and liberty, the insane who have not yet harmed themselves or others on the possibility that they might do so or do we respect and protect the rights and liberty of all even if it means the insane end up doing harm first before action to deprive them of liberty is taken?

The involuntary hold due to insanity has a long and sordid history in our society. Once used vindictively now used very sparingly if at all.

Never got into read up on why much. Why do the ones behind mass shootings do it ? On narcotics ? It was just posted that heard voices in head ? I do know at mental health place, hear voices in head like someone or multiple ppl are actually talking an u hear it or self harm or harm to others. Are red flag that get the health care provider to call le an get u commited. Otherwise at mental health place. Anything u say is kept in room. They ask u if thoughts of suicide or murder or harm others an last if hear voices in head . I told them racing thoughts or intrusive thoughts. But have never heard a actual voice in head. Let me explain that.

His MOS or military occupational specialty was petroleum supply specialist. Meaning he was initially and primarily trained to operate petroluem supply equipment.

In actual practice though nobody in the US Army is restricted to just their MOS. Individual soldiers may pick up secondary training and even a secondary MOS. And commanders are free to assign personnel to duty slots regardless of MOS. In my time I took the Nuclear, Biological, Chemical warfare course in addition to my primary 62J General Construction Equipment Operator MOS. I was tasked as a platoon NBC specialist assisting our company NBC NCO in addition to my regular duty as an operator. I would also later be assigned to the maintenance platoon, in spite of not being a mechanic, as part of the fuel handlers squad. I never held a petroleum supply MOS.

My guess is this guy was a petroleum specialist MOS who had shown an aptitude for training and was a good shooter so had been assigned as a company or battalion level trainer. I also gather from reading about him that he was an NCO so it would be a natural fit for him to be a trainer.

And we do not know, though I'm sure it would be reported, whether he held any civilian certifications in firearms.

Bottom line is that he is dead. It is a shame that there were no armed citizens to have sped up that process significantly. I do not know what the carry laws are in Maine. I don't really care much what the carry laws are anywhere I go. The real problem is that too many citizens errantly do care, and in this particular case, at the demise of a lot of innocent people, as well as their surviving relatives and loved ones.

My concern is he completely fills out the left's stereotypical mass shooter. White male, veteran, gun enthusiast, trained in firearms, once liked a right leaning comment on X and mental illness. The only thing missing is his religious affiliation.

This event was tragic and had the men in those locations been armed this would have turned out differently
