I know that to get the same apples as a parent tree , you have to graft onto rootstock , But there is an old tree on my route that is loaded every year , and they hang on tree extremely late . Would you expect seeds from these to produce late hanging fruit ,no matter what kind of apple they produce?

My guess is yes, if parent is a late hanger, seedling should be too. As noted, if not grafted, it will resemble the parent, but no telling for certain what apples will be. And beyond that, it may be 6 to 8 years before it bears fruit to find out what it grew to be. The other thing, if not grafted onto a dwarfing root stock, it will grow to standard size, which is going to be a big study tree compared to what most are familiar with.

You could easily cut a piece of scion wood off the tree and graft onto whatever rootstock you choose and you will mimic the tree. Read about rootstocks and determine what size of tree you would like and what works best for your soils. By cutting some scion wood and grafting - your new tree will the closest replica you can get.

If the apple tree is not grafted, any suckers you can get off the tree will be clones. If the suckers don't have a decent root system, you can place a bottomless bucket over them and fill it partially with dirt, sand or wood shavings and the suckers will put out copious roots in a few months.

You can easily clone and make root stock, for grafting to, that way too.
