Looking at a used van. Asked the salesman if I could run it over to my mechanic for an inspection. He says no, cant let the vehicle out of my presence. I've never been told no on that before. Seems like a red flag to me. He says no one does that anymore. The last one I bought we drove it home kept it overnight then took it to the mechanic. Salesman is like but we look it all over and tell you everything. Whatever

Run, don't walk, away from that.

Did you get the VIN and run a Carfax report on it? I would start there, and if he balks at even doing that, then don't give it a second though, find a different dealer.

Pretty common here as well, most won’t let a car out of their site, and will go along for a test drive.

Used to be able to trust a buyer when they said they will be back with the cash, everyone wants at least
50% down as well thats not even with dealing with a dealer

You other folks must live in a time warp 😝

I get many not wanting them out of their sight then they can come along , if them taking a drive with you to your local ASE certified mechanic so that he/she can toss it on the rack for 20 minutes and give it a good look at your expense , then they don't want to sell that car or they know something is wrong with it.

Funny he said thet,If you trade in a car to a dealer they always have it looked over by their own mechanic.
You should have mentioned that factoid to him when he told you no one does that anymore, lol.

I only buy from private parties, never even think about dealerships anymore. Their phone calls after being there are enough to turn my off ever going to those places again.

Been that way a good spell here.

First car I bought in the '70's, he tossed my the keys and said take it home for the weekend.

Last one, the guy hopped in the backseat for just a ride up the road.

Lookin' for a truck myself, with not much luck. Ever since the Auto Workers went on strike, prices have been climbing thru the roof for used vehicles, because they know NEW ones will be crazy high when this is over.

Pay your mechanic to come look at it with you.
