If I were to make a meat bait that was rotten down to the point of basically a liquid, would it even matter what type of meat it is in that stage of decomposition? Example: would rotten down horse meat be more favorable than rotten down raccoon meat? Or at that level of rot it’s all basically the same? Thanks guys and gals!

My GUESS is if tested side by side the kind of meat would influence the coyotes preference.

I've never tested this idea but a friend of mine makes a bait that he has used both bobcat and horse as rhe base that I tested a lot. This bait is a great bait that has more glands and top shelf ingredients in it than a lot of commercial lures out there. I really didn't think with all the extra ingredients in this bait that the base would make much difference but it did. The coyotes always had a preference for one over the other when tested side by side. And I've tested it a lot

I have tested a curiosity lure of my own creation for a few seasons now with good results. The base ingredient is bobcat meat taken all the way down. It cant rot any further. I have two other ingredients along with it. It wasnt intended to be a bait. I use in small quantities down a mouse sized hole. I would like to try the same formula with horse to see if any different.

IMHO, yes it matters what type of meat base you use? Your example of Horse vs Raccoon? I would choose Horse.
Even after ageing for months or years the base material is going to have it's own unique smell. Sometimes all we smell is stink!
For example, aged fish is going too smell a lot different then aged bobcat.
The challenging part is finding good base materials to use and ingredients too boost the base material.

Hmmm, trying to remember which commercial bait made that claim so that I can buy the right one…. I know I saw that somewhere…

I think he's working on getting to the point where he's going to start selling it but it's never been available to the general public before.

Have you tried rotted down rattlesnake?? Highly attractive and it's a very thin fluid when you strain out the bones and scales.

Laz, are you referring to the grey water that they render down to in the hot months?

Yes, precisely. Let it go a year longer and it will get a mellow, almost mild/sweet odor.

In my opinion the meat used matters when rotted down completely.

Thanks guys, crazy how even at that level of rot they can distinguish the meat type. What method would u recommend or what ways can I turn a 5 gallon bucket of meat into a liquified “I wanna roll on that” nasty mess?

First thing I can recommend is don't fill the bucket all the way up... or do and post pictures of the results.

Ground will probably work better than chunked if you want true liquid bait. What I have done for a "stink bait" is chunk up meat and put it in a bucket and fill it around 5/8's full, no more than 3/4's at most, then pour water in until it just covers the meat. Vent the bucket and let set in the sun over the summer. I've also did the same in glass gallon jars, this is more time intensive than doing it in a bucket, but one jar is plenty to pour down a posthole.

The best meats I found (under very limited and unscientific testing) were 1)bear trimmings from butchering (which also expand much more than other meats I've used, so keep this in mind when filling your vessel) 2)roadkill deer 3)deer and elk trimmings from butchering. Ground squirrel and rabbit also created interest but not nearly as much, to my surprise. Leftovers from making fish oil got very little interest here.
