In Canada do you have something like our 401K plan, and do you have a SS like the US?

How does your taxes rate work there? Are there tax percentages per income levels or is it a flat rate and is the percentage you pay in taxes?

Interesting. Thanks

Your political party's there are Liberal (dem) and conservative (rep) per se. Is the liberal (dem) party a larger political group in Canada?

The spelling of “conservative” are about the only similarity between Canadian conservatism and American conservatism

Big difference

Liberalism/socialism is very similar in both countries

Liberals here are more center left and Conservatives more center right.
Not nearly as extreme as the American Left and Right.
Then there are the NDP who are more extreme left wing and the Block Quebecois, who are far right Nationalist for Quebec Sovereignty. They dont exist outside Quebec.
Ontario is currently conservative under Doug Ford govt.Doug is a good friend of the trappers in Ontario and some of his Cabinet ministers attend our trapping conventions and AGMs
Manitoba just elected an NDP premier, who is Indigenous.

Lots of Leftys out west.BC Alberta elect a lot of leftys. The west was the birthplace of the Social Credit party which is todays NDP.
The east coast (maritime provinces) often vote Liberal or NDP as does the North.

Interesting. Since most conservative Americans think our conservative branch of a government is far too liberal... and you think it's far right, I guess that explains the disconnect, lol.

Of course it is.Must have mis read the question.
When I was working full time my income tax rate was about 20%
As a lower income pensioner it is closer to 15%

And your correct, our two main political partys are far less extreme than yours-more centered on the spectrum

Thanks everyone for your replies. I often wondered about the differences and wish we could have a more neutral government here. We need a leader to bring us all together for the better.

It’s hard to compare Canadian conservatives with American conservatives,,apple’s too orange’s type comparison.

Also, Provincial and federal parties are not the same(except the NDP)

Federally the Canadian Conservative party would alignment much more closer too the Democrats,,,,Left of Center

There’s a small party with no seats(peoples party of Canada. PPC) that would be about as close too the republicans as there is in Canada. Right of center

There's nothing "neutral" about our arrangement Snowy. The balance beams start off tilted significantly to the left and the right is afraid to be on the right since it makes them largely unelectable.
The political fate of this country is always decided by the whims of Ontario and Quebec... our system is similar to the electoral college, but on steroids and heavily favors Quebec.

Nowhere is perfect, but I think our 2 countries are about as good as it's ever gonna get... but we're both circling that Euro/Socialism drain.

Just happy to be here.

How much time have you spent in Alberta ?

I've spent a lot of time there deer hunting and have never met a lefty !!

Might be some in Calgary & Edmonton but the vast majority
of Alberta's citizens that I met are definitely right wing conservatives.

I'll agree that most all of B.C. is populated by left wing, pot smoking hippies.

In fact, most of Alberta's right wing conservatives
want to secede from Canada & join the United States !!! laugh

Been there a few times.Got a couple brother in laws that lived there for many years..
Their last far left Premier Notley (NDP) did alot of dmamge over there.
West was always a hotbed of leftys.
Tommy Douglas,( a Scot) the Father of Canadian Universal Healthcare, and Canadas greatest Canadian,is from Out west.I believe he was Social Credit Party at the time.
Also lots of eastern europeans settled over there and brought their politics with them.
Also lots of Aboriginals there and they always vote left.

I would agree that both your left and right wing parties are a lot further from the center than ours are here.
For example, although the Conservatives here in Ontario have a lot more outdoors people in the party,a lot of good gains were made for trappers under the Liberal government under Donna Cansfield(liberal govt minister of Natural resources).
Our board thought when we heard a middle aged woman from the suburbs of toronto was gonna be the minister of Natural resources we would be up against an anti of the worst kind.We were wrong What a pleasant surprise when we met her and got to know her.
Donna even wore fur.
So here you cannot dismiss politicians out of hand because of their party affiliations.
Good friendly working relationsips can be developed if you dump your political predjudices at he door when you are dealing with govts that are closer to the center than those out in the wings.

No,even Don Cherry finished ahead of J A MacDonald,(the Father of Confederation).
I voted (for the greatest Canadian)for old John A. though,I liked him he was a hard drinking bad arse leader at the time, even though he was an Orangeman,I could give him a pass on that for what he did for our Country.
I visited his grave in Kingston, and had a shot of whiskey in his memory.

They, meaning the Midwestern parts of Canada suffer from the same problem we do here.......the cities rule the vote.

Take Manitoba for instance. Population of about one and a quarter mil....... 3/5th of them are in Winnipeg and like our cities, out vote the rural folk.

Actually I would bet just as many rural folk are FN in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and they almost always vote left.Like Winnipeg Regina and Saskatoon have high populations of FN also.Around 10 to 15%,enough to sway an election.
Manitoba had a conservative govt but the leader had to resign over some issue.Self inflicted whatever it was.
Now Manitoba has a FN NDP Premier.
The vote swung way left.
