The Shopmate.name was first used in 1958. Your drill is probably from the sixties or seventies. You can buy the same Shopmate drill for $5.00 on Ebay.

1961-1965 is as close as I can guess. In 1960 they made a model 740 CG. I'm guessing the 740 CM can shortly afterwards.

I think I have a ShopMate sander somewhere... but this ShopCraft drill was my dad's probably early 1960's.
Based on the similar design language- It appears they were private labeled under different brands from the same factory or different rebranding based on time periods, both Geneva, IL

I had one just like that one given to me in the mid- 60’s and used it to build my 1st house in 1966. The gray cord cracked so badly by the time I built my 2nd house in 1974 I replaced it and somewhere through the years following it went away!

Got me curious so I looked it up... "The Electric Drill May Seem Like a Modern Invention, but It's Quite Old. Fast forward to modern times and the development of the electric drill. The first one was invented in 1889 by two Australians, Arthur Arnot and William Bryan. They paired up an electric motor to a traditional drill design...."

I used to have a Model 1 Black and Decker aluminum body drill similar to your drill that my grandpa gave me. Somehow my POS BIL ended up with it, then divorced my sister.

I have an old chrome bodied craftsman from my grandpa, circa 1950s. You can watch the sparks inside when you use it. And grandpa cut the ground prong off to work in his 2 blade outlets.

I have a couple 1/2" drills from this era too that I use to mix trapping bait. They are on or off, no reverse and no variable speed. Better have your foot on that bucket to hold it in place when you pull the trigger. lol
